Looking for my first pocket gun.

I have never been a fan of sticking a handgun in a pocket. Change, zippo's, lip balm...etc is for pockets. There are a host of issues and the main one is getting the dang thing out if you need to use it. Think about getting an IWB(Inside the Waist Band) holster for your Ruger. It will take a little getting used to, but after a few weeks you won't know it's there. Then, it is always in the same place and accessible no matter what you wear.
Here is one IWB compliments of Google:

Thats what I pack (Ruger LCP) all year long, easy to toss on the night stand and pick it up as I put my watch on. Fits nice in the back pocket of the levis, . . .
Exactly. You can carry it, and it's completely unobtrusive. Plus, unless you tell them, nobody else will know. (see the next post)

I have never been convinced of the wisdom of carrying one gun in the summer and a different one in the winter.

Carry one gun all year long, in the same position, and you will never suffer from confusion on "where is it?" And for all you guys who think that is stupid and that they will never forget which gun they have, recognize that the moment you have to pull your concealed weapon is going to be the most stressful minute of your life.

Get a SmartCarry holster and the draw is the same summer or winter.

And, resist the urge to tell all of your friends and acquaintances about your permit and that you carry.

If the situation ever arises that you need the gun, it may well be to your advantage to wait . . .

I am sure the Ruger is a nice gun, and it will work just fine. On the other hand, the Smith and Wessons have been around for a lot longer, and have been proven in the field. The price difference is not that much, I think I have even seen Smiths for less than the Ruger. . .
Some really good points.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the S&W. The OP of this thread asked about the Ruger. (also, I happen to be a Ruger nut) :D

I'd love to have a revolver with transfer bar safety as my daily carry, but the LCP just seems a little big to hide in my front pocket. I wish it was just a smidge smaller.;)
Huh? Do you mean the LCR? The LCP is a semi-auto pistol.

I would have to respectfully disagree. I have a bad case of "middle-age spread," and don't want anything else in my waistband. :D My guns are standing up, ready for easy draw, in a pocket holster. The Nemesisョ — DeSantis Holster

Never 'really' carried and recently received my CCP. My home guns are a little large to be stuffing down my pants regardless of the available room so I've been shopping.

And for some weird reason, for a gun in my front pants pocket, I want a revolver.

I'm leaning towards this one.

Ruger LCR Double-Action Revolver Model 5405

5405.jpg

Is this an alloy model? cause loaded it's gonna weigh ~ a pound.

Don't know why they put such a big front sight on there, target practice?

They got rid of the hammer, but then put a pocket hook front site on ?

In personal defense, if you have time to aim, you probably have time to get away. It's different if your coming to the aid of a third party, sight could come in handy for a strategically placed shot.

Not trying to sound to critical, for a pocket revolver it looks pretty decent, haven't compared it to any others though.

Yes the LCR would be a good choice in pocket pistols Ruger is always good quality and hard to beat. I have not handled one yet but I have shot a few LCP's and they are real decent and the plastic frames absorb most of the felt recoil so they are not bad to plink with.

My pocket pistol is an North American Arms (NAA) guardian in .380. I bought it at the time because Crimson Trace was already making laser grips for them and I bought the grips at the same time.

It is a finger biting little sob and it kicks like a mule being stainless steel and the trigger guard configuration makes it a pain to shoot I have fairly large hands, anyone that has shot it wont shoot it again.

Its 100% reliable though and its beautifully machined and shoots very well out to 15 yds so I have no complaints other than it isn't pleasant to shoot and it was pricey.

fwtw I even started reloading .380 as soon as it got as high as .40 SW and am currently loading a 115 JHP that shoots great and costs 1/4 of new ammo since I have tons of 115's around anyway for my 9mm and 38 Supers. I figured why not develop a load for .380 with whats on hand.

Alloy, polymer, stainless and titanium. Very lightweight.

The picture you're looking at has the optional tritium night sight. The standard is a plain ramp. Hangs up on nothing. If you use a holster, hang-ups are pretty much a moot point anyway.

I don't think you're being critical, just posting honest questions/observations. Always good to know what's what before purchasing.

It shoots very well. More to the point, I shoot better with it every time I use it. ;)

Depending on the size of your hands it will actually start to become too small, as you will tend to have issues just placing your finger tip on the trigger. I take a size 9 glove, and with the LCP, the butt only come down to my ring finger. I noticed early on that I was pulling shots. I looked it over and studied my hand placement. I noticed due to the small size, the trigger had a natural tendancy to wanna roll to my first knuckle rather than my finger tip. I ended up getting the ruger clip with the finger roll on the heel. Now the heel slips in between my ring finger and pinky, giving me a more firm grip on the grip. It made a world of difference in rapid succession short range, and snap shots.

The Ruger LCR is a fine choice. It has the best trigger in its class. Go to a dealer and pull a few triggers, you'll understand what I mean. Best of all. fully loaded with .38 +P 150 grain JHP and Crimson Trace Laser it weighs just under a pound.
