Ethylene glycol will burn if not mixed with water. I am using 5o-50 Peak premix formula, it is foolproof. When I used the unmixed version, I used distilled water to help with the life, but always mixed heavy on coolant side?60-40, but pockets of air cause havoc with in- block mixxing. No coolant and water pump seals can leak?

Car Doc,

Here is a refractometer, but it is only good to -60, and I'm pretty sure I'm at that point or below.

That's a real good one Danny and a bargain at that price I am not kidding!!!

Its the same exact one I have that I got from Snap-On and paid $120 or so for years ago. And btw its -60 for Propylene glycol and -84 for Ethylene glycol which is most likely what you are using it reads both plus battery specific gravity . hth

What I like about refractometers is you can test them by putting a drop of tap water on the lens, they say use inoized or distilled it doesn't matter they all freeze the same but it will show you it works its a very accurate tool.

I'd rather have too much antifreeze and not freeze it. If you go 50/50 you could freeze it and destroy the engine.

??? 50:50 is the ratio engine manufacturers want.....safest to run

Yes thats correct and there are several reasons that support using no more than 50/50 however it will freeze so one ratio doesn't fit all areas so if it doesn't get below -34 where we are than 50/50 is ok.

Snowmobile manufacturers recommend a 60/40 ratio of ethylene glycol to distilled water and these things are subjected to extreme conditions ;)
