.

I'm probably gonna get flamed for THIS, but does anyone know if it is illegal to just shoot and bury the horse? I live in Missouri. If you think it is unethical to shoot the horse, you are welcome to come pick it up...

So, you are willing to take the time to shoot the horse and dig a rather large hole to bury it. But, not willing to call the local radio station to put out an announcement? Or better yet just put the word out that it is free for the taking. Post it in the local veternarians office and/or feed store. I assure you someone will take it.
Shooting it would not be cool at all.

I don't see anything wrong with eating horses, although horse slaughter is illegal in this country.

If I let it continue to stay here, it will eventually become "my" horse. And since I don't have any fencing of any kind, it will be my responsibility if the horse tramples someone's beloved pet or kicks a kid in the head.

uhhh before you shoot the horse..... miniature horses are becoming very poplular in these parts and some are quite valuable depending on the coloration...thats all I know about that. Take a picture of the horse, post it here and on craigslist. Someone will either pay you for it, or claim it as thier own. Either way, you won't have to dig a hole or kill someones pet.

Well I would probably burn it rather than bury it, no major time commitment there. Or drag it into the woods and let the coyotes eat it. If I give it away, that still results in someone losing their beloved pet.

Anyway, I think someone from work is going to take it. Attempt to, anyway. It's quick and it has endless room for escape. (Eventually, IT WILL COME BACK.)

Let's take a deep breath, I knew I would get flamed for asking. Shooting it would be a last-case scenario, but I was just curious if I have that option. But to answer your question, yes I would ultimately be willing to shoot it. But I'm not going to just run home and shoot it "because I can."

The sheriff won't do anything unless it's causing damage or I know who it belongs to.

And after re-reading my post, it does sound a bit like I was just going to shoot it. I kind of mis-represented myself. I don't have much heart or shooting things (never been a hunter of any type, much to my dad's disappointment). I wouldn't enjoy shooting the horse, but if I can't get rid of it, eventually I would (as long as it's legal -- which is what I was asking, and I don't think it is anyway).

Are you anywhere near Lamar/Liberal ... I have some friends up there that can probably pick that pony up ... if you can catch him.

I can't say whether it is legal or not though I doubt it especially since you don't own it.

I shot a horse for my wife's family as it was suffering and they were going to use a shotgun and were really not up to it emotionally. I ended its suffering with my revolver; I sure hope I never have to do that again.

I was raised on a farm and hunted/hunt and killing animals for food was a way of life, but dogs and horses etc. are just really hard.

Years ago working the 2nd shift my wife and I were driving home around 12 am. In the middle of the road in town was a pony. We stopped and figured out where it must have come from. Everyone's lights were off and we thought to catch it and put it inside his pasture. We chased, it ran and finally it headed back and scooted through its fence and back in. I think this was a regular occurrence!

If you think it will be easier to burn a horse than bury it, you have never burned large animals. It takes a LOT of fuel. I days of old we burned dead cattle, and it might take a week to get rid of everything.

Not sure that is correct.

On Nov. 18 Barack Obama handed the reins back to Doubrava and horse owners all over the county. H.R. 2112, The Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2012, was quietly signed into existence, a bill that opened the floodgates of funding to the U.S. Department of Food and Agriculture so that they could once again inspect horses destined for slaughter. That funding was taken away in 2007 resulting in the cessation of slaughter.

Dang, I'm actually surprised by that.

Good news, someone has agreed to take it! They're coming by tonight after work, and since the horse has been in pretty much the same spot for the past 4 days, I'm reasonably sure it will still be there.

About shooting your in-law's horse, I can imagine that would be real tough. I had to shoot a stray dog that kept killing ducks, and I felt wretched for days.
