Grief from helping a friend.

I wouldnt give him or her the satisfaction of buying the POS as he called it from him. I have learned in my 38 years that you have very few TRUE friends in life, friends that will drop anything and be there for you, I can count less than 5 friends that I know will always be there for me and I would be there for them and they know it.

No good deed goes unpunished. He is truley not the friend you thought he was. Wash your hands and dont look back. You cant fix stupid.

I got tired of being used,... I made a rule for myself.

I will not help anyone I don't see trying to help them selves.
If I start to help someone and they stop helping them selves I quit.

Anyone else who asks for help its a simple answer, NO

following this rule has pretty much solved all problems with being used.

I agree and feel the same. One of the big problems that many many people have is that if they know someone they call them a friend when in reality they are not friends, but acquaintances and acquaintances are not friends, by my definition anyway.

I try to help folks, but it is hard sometimes. Also, when you and your friends are in different economic situations makes a big difference. If I buy a old machine and I have problems with it, I might kick myself a little, but it isn't going to cause a big problem with my finances - sounds like your friend really couldn't afford to buy that machine, or at least his wife didn't think so. ( Same difference? :) )

From your side of the story, (as we all know there are always two sides)
Nevertheless ...you've been a good friend. You've spent time and fuel helping your friend.
Problem is ... he doesn't appreciate the value of your time and machines. He thought having his own machine would be like using yours for free after paying a nominal amount for an old machine. We know better.

He didn't figure the maintenance cost and his learning curve. Until he appreciates what you've done for him so far, he will be griped with you.

Distance yourself from him. He'll suck you dry and still be griped at you.

Yup!!!

The last psychologist I talked to (at a luncheon not on a couch) said it's best not to have friends. After reading your post I do think he is right.

My rule is;
Every one gets one chance and how soon and what condition the item is returned dictates our future dealings.
Surprisingly most of my good pals can't return things fast enough.

I do have a 'never again' list, those on it tend to be the type that say the item was a POS or that it was so badly worn out that it died.
Also on that list are those that I had to drive XX miles to retrieve MY tool 3 months later to do my job.

Then you get the chap that says "sorry, I broke the---" and " hope this is a suitable replacement"
