What was the item ?, can't be the only store that carries it.

Take it to another store that does take receipt-less returns.

It was an Amazon Kindle

I stick every receipt I get into a shoe box. Newest one goes at the back, so they're in chronological order. After 3 years, the receipt gets shredded.

Just a thought from a former retailer. Thermal receipts fade fairly quickly. Use a Sharpie to write on the back the date, register#, cashier's name or number, transaction #, item # and price. Then you have the original even if faded. Most thermal receipt paper has a company logo on the back. With the computerized inventory systems it is easy to check stock to see if a store has on the peg or shelf what it is supposed to have. One of the last bogus returns I was involved with was a lady trying to return an expensive dog grooming kit, a digital fuel meter and a blingy ladies western belt. Each iten was $50-60. No receipt and she said her boyfriend bought them yesterday but lost the receipt. I checked stock with a scanner and was short one of each on the shelf. Needless to say, no refund was given. I had the items in a basket and told her that I would hold the items until she could find the receipt. No argument from her and never saw her again. Had it been a customer I knew or one of my employees knew the outcome may have been different. BTW, I did get a nasty phone call from the boyfriend but nothing came of it.

I realize all the bad/sad issues with thermal paper receipts, but I believe the stores use those to the customer's advantage as much as their own. They speed up checkouts, and there is less delay when the register runs out of paper. Can you imagine the anger it would cause if they used real ink and ran out of paper and ink at the same register within a few minutes or while checking out the same customer? I won't even go into ink spill issues. My inkjet printer is good, but less than perfect when the paper doesn't feed right. It fills up the printer with ink and I have to do an immediate cleaning. I doubt that many retailers want their checkers fooling with real ink. Loading thermal paper into a register is fairly easy. Even monkey-fists like me can understand how to do that.;)

I hope this hasn't been mentioned as I don't feel like reading through these 5 pages but:

A: If it's never opened and they can scan it back into their system I see no reason to too.

B: Around here (Michigan) there is ZERO competition for Best Buy in terms of retail stores - Circuit City went out of business a while ago and now if you want to go to an electronic superstore you have a Choice of Best Buy in location A or Best Buy in location B. Without the competition the prices seem higher - both online and in stores vs a Wal Mart or some other online store. This to me is very frustrating. I really would like to see a Best Buy competitor to put them back in check on their prices and policies.

An un-opened item could have been stolen. I think it's fair to require documentation proving you purchased the item ... & fair to not give a refund if you don't have it.

Most ink printers (such as the Star SP500 series) are dot matrix, so they have an ink ribbon and a roll of paper. They are much slower at printing than a thermal printer and cant do some of the fancy stuff a thermal pritner can do.

Maybe I'm wrong but I thought they could look up the past purchase with the barcode and such - and if they can't it seems like with the way technology is these days the sure could.

True. The new policy OP learned of the hard way will probably be stores' new way of making/ keeping money - A certain percentage of people will never keep their receipt, or lose it, therefore stores will get to keep the $ from those transactions.

Plus, if you come in for a refund, after asking "Do you have your receipt?", upon hearing "no", the clerk says "I can't give you a refund.", which takes less time, rather than the longer process of actually providing a refund, the paperwork, etc.

Seems they're chasing pennies these days.

I bought something from an Apple store for Christmas this year and they sent me an email receipt which I thought was pretty neat because I would not be able to loose it. It just shows who's going the extra mile for their customer.

Best buy will look up and retrieve your receipt if you paid via check or credit card for up to two years from purchase. They cannot get a copy for cash transactions per their website.

I love it how when a company is protecting itself from people who steal goods from any other store and then attempts to return it to Best buy - is considered " new way of making money"

ARE YOU SERIOUS !!!!!!!.

I have had to show receipts for returned goods for a little over 45 years, so is this a "new" idea?

Let me know when you open a store so I can either buy something on sale for 20% off at another store then bring it back to YOU for full retail without a receipt and pocket a 20% profit.

Better yet, I will steal something from your store then walk back in and return it with no receipt and make 100% profit because you don't want to find a "new way" to make profits.

What about the employees that sell goods at the register to their friends for $1.00 and the friends brings it back WITHOUT a receipt for a full refund.

How about employees stealing goods out the back door in garbage cans and they later have their buddy grab it and return it for full price.

I could go on and on for another 100 ways no receipt returns are a bad idea.

My goodness has the entire world just turned upside down. Are these Wall street protester cry babies infected everyone?

I am serious. I've successfully returned items many times, especially to my local Home Depot (my home away from home), without a receipt, simply by letting them scan the debit card I used to originally purchase the item.

Eliminating this policy would surely allow a company to keep more of the $ they took in ... aka more profit.

You did see where I posted in post #50 that I think this is fair, didn't you?? And, even in the post you quoted (post #53), I never implied this was a bad policy.

I think your going a little over board. There are plenty of ways for a store - especially one that specializes in electronics - to look up past purchases.

BTW returning an item that was 20% off for a regular price refund would be a 25% profit for the thieving customer

Interesting that you misinterpret my post(s) & then decide I've been affected by those idiot "Wall street protester cry babies" (I do like that term!).

I accept your apology - Are we friends again?

As I posted earlier, the only item best buy won't except without a receipt is something that was paid for with cash. Anything else paid for online, or in-store with a check, debit, or credit card they will look up your receipt for you.
