2520 popping out of 4WD

A button in the old days use to be a follower that rested on a rotating cylinder.

Ok, so here is the scoop on what they did to my tractor. Both times they had it they only took off the side cover where the 4wd shifter enters the tranny. They replaced part #11 on the drawing which has an official name of "bar" on the parts list. The mechanic said that he calls that part a button, which is where the confussion has been. He said that he noticed that the bar/button didn't look right the second time that he had it apart (possibly not machined properly or worn). I don't think it was worn because my tractor only had 12 hours on it when it started popping out of 4wd. Anyhow he replaced that "bar". His theory is that it wasn't holding firmly on the collar that the bar rides in and presses against when you actuate the 4wd lever which was possibly causing some chucking. He thinks that the chucking might be why it was popping out of 4wd under stressful situations. I guess that sounds logical. So far so good, I haven't had it pop out of 4wd since I got it back the second time. I used it again today with heavy loads in the bucket and it stayed in 4wd. Another thing that I've noticed is that the grinding/binding noise that the tractor made since it was new when it was in 4wd and going down a hill is gone, which also reinforces my thought that it is finally fixed. Maybe that noise that I heard was the chucking that the mechanic was talking about. The problem the first time they had my tractor was that it wasn't put back together properly. The bar was not seated in the collar properly which it why it wouldn't engage in 4wd and the lever could freely move up and down.

Maybe he was talking about the bearing block that is on the end of the selector shaft that actually moves the collar. That would be something you could get to through the side cover, and might be considered "button like".

So that was it. The button-like bearing block. They should update the description in the manuals :)

The thing that makes the most sense are the detent balls (DQ in the photo).

pdp11 I thought you meant this.::laughing:

Trying to imagine what a tractor mechanic sees as a "button" isn't easy. I couldn't understand how you could get the detent balls out through the side cover, so I guess what makes the most sense isn't they most likely answer. :)

Just razing you. Ya know I do not think that you could get the detent balls out thru the cover because you would have to remove the collar or atleast be able to move the collar off those to get them out.

Bottom line is thank god he has it fixed and is doing ok for now.

Well I guess I am going and have to bite the bullet and let them take the tractor for service... I was spreading 23 ton of limestone the last few days on my driveway and my tractor is still popping out of 4wd... I have not tried a heavy load in a while and I guess I was hoping that it might have fixed itself...(I know wishful thinking!) It never pops out going up hill just when there is a load on the front going down hill. The only problem I have now is that I will have to wait until spring, I can't go without it this winter unless they can guarantee a 1-2 day turn around time... Other than that the tractor has been awesome especially with the new chains.

Ask if they will give you loaner. My dealer usually has some used machines he will loan out if necessary.

I have just read this entire thread and I feel your pain! (The both of you). I can so imagine something like this happening in todays world, it is far too typical these days. I hope you get yours fixed also in the spring. Could you elaborate on your limestone treatment for your driveway? I googled "My driveway is clay" 2 weeks ago and ended up here! What a great Forum!
