Any tips for removing a pin from the backhoe ?

Just thinking out loud here. I have not tried this. There are impact drills that have an impact only mode (Hilti Brand comes to mine). They can be used to drive ground rods in the ground. This type of impact might help.

SSDoxie (Dennis) had good advice and recognized the problem on the first page.

Other then what he said I would only add:

What I would first do is get the hoe in a non weight bearing position, bucket on the ground and the dipper stick straight up, then maneuvering the boom so the loose side of the pin appears to be in the center of the hole, if it moves.

Next I would hammer on the flag to see if the flag and pin rotate in the bore. That would tell you if the pin is seized.

Then follow Dennis' advice.

Learned a lot from the advice given, thank you all.

The pin has been in a non load bearing position and it is siezed in the centre.

It is worn and free moving in both outer load bearing points.

We are going to cut the flag off and drive temporary bushes in both sides so as we can use the machine to dig a trench etc which is what it was bought for.
Two out of the three rams need new seals so they are coming off to be repaired, the machine will be then good for work until we can get around to renewing everything.

When the work is done then we will take the backhoe to pieces and refurbish it, I think that is the best plan.

Company not very helpfull on this to date.

dealer suggested I contact the company for part numbers....I thought that was their job!!

Its an old model, and not much info at the manufactureres but I would have thought that the design would have continued for some time.

Just a bit of advice......That pin is hardend steel. To much heat and may snap right off. The Flag is the keeper for the pin. From the looks of it the pin has been like this for a long while. May want to do like one post said"weld the flag to the boom and rotate the pin around a bit". Although i really do not think that will get this unit back up and running. Also you will have a hard time finding spacers for the ends.May try to find Babbet metal and make your own. Not the best but may work.....Good Luck

Before I cut the flag off, I would put a large pipe or crescent wrench on it and a LONG (6 feet) cheater bar for added leverage and see if you can get it to rotate. The flags shape would allow a big wrench to really get a good bite. If you can break the seize free, the pin may be able to be driven out from the grease zerk side. You might also find that after the flag is cut off, you can drive the pin out from that side. Point being, before I cut the flag off, I would use it to help try to break the pin free.

Do you have a good welder you can use? I would weld a long bar to that flag for leverage and then try to twist it back and forth to loosen it up.

Do you have a good welder you can use? I would weld a long bar to that flag for leverage and then try to twist it back and forth to loosen it up.

I'm looking for some tube to hammer in and take up the wear in the nipple end, then I'll cut off the flag and do the same to that end.
This will get us up and working and we can worry about it during the summer.
May need some serious cutting and welding to get it right.

That is the only pin that we have trouble with now, rams away for resealing and ordered some new grease nipples

Get that done in the warmer weather, could have done with a torch today to free the bottom pin off, got it done with a blowtorch

This illustration from my mini-excavator parts book shows how the flag pin is supposed to hold the pin from rotating so all movement is between the pin and bushing. Looks like when your pin seized in the bushings it really wallowed out the holes. You have your work cut out for you building that back up.

Found a piece of solid bar just smaller that the pin and cut a piece off about 3" long

Brother Edd held this over the pin with a pair of tongues whilst brother John whacked it with a sledge hammer.

Second strike it started to move and we were able to drift the pin out.

The pin is very worn at either end but perfect in the middle so we cleaned it and put some grease in via a new nipple and it squirted out the hole in the centre. The grooves in the pin for the gease to follow are perfect so here's what we intend to do....

We ground the flag off the end for re-use and are going to put a sleeve over each end the same size as the holes in the outer arm to take up the wear. Then reamer out the holes in the outer arm to the same size as the sleeves.
refit the pin and weld the flag back on so as we can secure it and hey presto good as new at very little cost (bits from under the bench)
