Working on a Jinma 254 for a friend of mine, the gear that drives the transfer gear to the front drive (the gear that's in the gearbox case, not the one in the transfer case) needs replaced. I know I need to split the tractor to get that gear out, but where do I need to split it? Can I split it between the hi/lo gearbox and the transmission? Or in front of the hi/lo? Or do I need to split at the bellhousing and work my way back?

Thanks for any help.

I used to own a pair of JM254s. IIRC, the transfer case is bolted directly beneath the transmission housing. And the mid-connect (hi/lo) case is physically part of the bell housing. If that holds true, split between the tranny housing and the mid-connect (hi/lo) housing. I liked the design of my KM454 much better. When I tore up that sliding gear and shaft, I was able to physically remove the entire tranny box from the tractor, turn it upside down, then fix on the bench. Ain't gonna be that convenient on your Jinma.

But if my memory is faulty - and the transfer case is actually below the hi/lo housing - split it between the bell housing and the engine. Then remove the whole bell housing/mid-connect box combo from the front half, so you can work on it at the bench.

For some of the gears I do believe they will come out through the top of the case no need to split the beasty but not sure on which one you need... Blue Chip or Tommy from Affordable will know for sure. Maybe go to their website and look at the IPB and see which gears you need and then call & talk to them. smart cookies.

If it were me I'd give a call to Ranch Hand or affordable, these folks are very knowledgable. I also believe they have step by step procedures/pictures on their websites on different fixes{??}

Thanks for the reply guys. I don't have a parts book, but may need one if this thing stays around... :p The transfer case does bolt to the bottom of the hi/lo gearbox (right in front of the transmission), the gear that is broken is the one that the top gear of the transfer case meshes with (or doesn't mesh with in this case...). About 4 teeth are stripped.

This tractor has been a bit of a problem child, partially operator induced, partially "dealer" induced. New pistons and sleeves at 8 hours (block heater installed wrong, popped out and operator didn't catch it). Then driving down the road the front end locked up, replaced a gear in the front knuckle (from Affordable) that had a broken tooth, tried to go hook up the loader after that and it locked up again...and now found this gear. Hopefully I'll get it fixed for him and it will not come back. :)

My memory is indeed faulty, those two Jinmas were quite a few years ago. I've uploaded a scan of that section of the tractor, #44 is identified as the sliding gear.
