That' a dangerous thing, the fact they encourage the machine to be used as a crane. It is totally forbidden to use the larger much more HD machines for lifting anything but people and their tools/supplies.

There is such a higher risk of stressing and damaging the machine when used as a crane. It's a great convenience, but they should not be dual purpose.
A machine that has been used as a crane should not be used for the critical application of a man-lift.

The crane has its lift capacity displayed right on it (300 lbs), & we stayed well within it, lifting 1 truss at a time ... I can easily lift 1 truss myself. I see no problem whatsoever with using it as a crane :confused3:

Hey Bep, glad to hear it all went well, and sounds like you took the safe approach with the multiple cuts. Yep nice flat ground is the key to safer operation of all kinds of machinery (including tractors)

James K0UA

Thank you! All done now. Went just fine

Bep, if I,m not mistaking, you stated in a earlier post that this will lift 350lbs
including bucket.
If your trusses are syp, most here are, a quick estimate would be to multiply total feet of 2x4 in truss, bottom chord, top chord, all diagonal supports x 1.2 lbs pf.

The rental guy told me over the phone he thought the lift capacity was 350, but it turned out to be 300. Stickers are right on it.

I didn't think I needed to figure out exactly what the trusses weigh since I can easily lift one myself, & if you'll recall my picture atop the ladder atop the tractor roof ... I'm skinny! Thank you, tho.

The warning label is not going to stop someone else from overloading it.

The point is a machine that's used to lift materials, shouldn't be used to lift a person afterwards. People will abuse that thing for all it's worth, then dump it off at the rental shop, for some poor unsuspecting homeowner to get in.
I don't get how they can get away with promoting them for the dual purpose.
I was thinking maybe cause they aren't designed for job sites, so no OSHA involved. But that's not true, cause contractors use them too.

You can't (not supposed to) use the big boom lifts for lifting materials other than what fits in the basket. I know people do it, but there is no optional hooks to facilitate a chain or cable. I have heard of guys lifting steel or wood structural members.

Get up here and start thinking what abuse the machine was subjected to before you got it. it will start messing with your head.

That's not entirely unintentional :D

I try to capture the pucker factor feeling, but it's difficult with just a pictures.

They are machines, sometimes they don't react correctly to the users input controls and start acting like they have a mind of the own! That gets a little hairy

JB...I guess you get used to it after a while. I tree climb as well as tower climb. You learn to trust your equipment and then you are not so anxious.

Beppington...I forgot to tell you that I had already dibbs'ed your tractor in the event that something happened...

Seriously...I am glad you got it solved. That what does not kill you makes you stronger...(or something like that from Conan the Barbarian).
