True, it probbaly cant hurt itself lifting something vertically, but if you were lifting a load that was badly rigged and it were to slip, drop 3 feet and catch, you could easily shock load the boom.I'll bet it's true with the boom straight out horizontal, and I don't imagine the hydraulics are strong or fast enough to shock load anything beyond design load either; you would have to drop a load on it or something like that. Not that it couldn't have been done, but Billy Joe Bob isn't going to achieve it by hooking to an elephant and trying to lift it off the ground normally.

Or, try to lift and pull sideways with the boom extended.
