Coyote

What is a proper coyote fence? I've seen them climb over a 7' fence with turn in of about 18" when I was living outside Stockton, CA.

If I wasn't broke I'd bet that Setter is headed home. Real common in transplant situations.

Here is hoping he appears on your porch some day. Beautiful dog.

I grieved for weeks after I got the news, felt guilt about sending him west but the people who took him kept him in there ranch house, he bonded well with the other setter and was doing a fine job of finding the sharptails. We will never know what happened for sure.

Now to expand the thread a little, what caliber do you use? I have found my savage bolt action .17cal is perfect for small to medium game. I have even taken down hogs with it. I've never shot a coyote with it but I am guessing it would easily do the job. Before I bought it, I was using a mini-14 (.223) with a 30 round mag. for pigs.

Most of the time when I see one, I'm sitting in a deer stand waiting on a nice buck, so I usually have a Browning A-Bolt in 7.08 in my lap. Have taken a couple of coyotes with it. Never fails.

Now, when I'm looking for varmits, I carry my Marlin 917VS in .17 cal. I like it because it'll reach way on out there, which is usually where a coyote will be. Have only taken one with it, (and one beaver) but it did the job nicely on both accounts.

When I'm pig huntin, I carry my Ruger Mini 30 in 7.62x39 with lots o bullets. It'll do the job on a pig, deer, or coyote. Too much for a squirrel tho.

Until yesterday I had NEVER even heard of a .17 cal.

I thinki in my own Varmint thread here on TBN I never heard it mentioned either.

I need to check it out...

Be well,
David

Long ago, i had just finished building a 50 cal round ball rifle kit and just wanted to try it out, so went out behind the farmhouse with my nephew "squirrel hunting" (he with .22). Got one with a head shot. Makes cleaning real easy;-)

Around here coyotes have a tough time not getting shot. Legacy of the farming days. Nowadays we are all vineyards and vacation homes. So we are transforming from people who had reason to shoot coyotes to people who are scared of animals with teeth.
I don't dispute that some people have a reason to shoot them. Myself, I think they are needed to control the swan, goose and racoon populations. Your area may be different.

Good point, they have moved in here and are a huge pain.

The northern coyote is bigger then the southern because of cross breeding with wolves. They also are more likely to attack because of predatory instincts that were passed. I have been surrounded more then once on a dark night out in the yard. It's an erie fellings when a human feels they may be on the lower end of the food chain.

Recent game camera picture of Eastern coyote. Definitely a different critter from the ones in the West/South. Some folks in the Adirondacks call them "brush wolves"

Man look at the face on that big boy, must be a lot of Red Wolf in his DNA.. that is not the same face shape on most of the 'yotes I see around here.
