Coobie, how do you like your x740? I had been leaning toward an x530, but like the diesel. I am thinking about a smallish cyclone rake instead of the powerflow.
IMHO go with the diesel. If you are going to own the tractor long term the diesel is hard to beat.As far as the X740 love it,turns very sharp,7 iron deck is very stout, diesel engine is the cats ***** nice very smooth.Good luck on your choice.coobie

I'm jealous, I am only a few months away from ordering my X740 with the 7-iron and the wait is killing me.

I would lean towards the Powerflow if I were you. The cyclone rake is just another engine to maintain and you would have 2 engines to feed fuel to. The Powerflow works awesome from all the reviews and threads I have seen.

I am trying desperately to justify the X740, but the ONLY thing I need to do is mow grass.

I am also debating between the X540 and the X740. However, diesels last forever and sip fuel. I know if I buy a X540 that machine could last me 15 years too, but I really want that 7-iron deck!

I really like the X700 series! If you can do it, it would be the way to go.

If you divide the price difference by 15 it will show you how little extra a year it will cost you to have what you really want. If still not convinced, divide that by 12 and see how much extra a month. You will like just have to settle for a few less sodas or coffees to make up the difference.

The X740 is about $5,000 more here, so that's a bigger payment difference then just a few dollars. However, with the fuel consumption numbers thrown in, the diesel engine would use half the fuel the X540 would, it's very little difference in the scheme of things.

X740 it is!

I think you will find the diesel to do much better than twice in my experience, more like 3-5 times better and lasts much longer before it needs to be rebuilt. If you intend to keep the tractor for more than 10 years, you are far better off with the diesel.

Thanks, for the info on the rake.I bought a chain harrow that seems to do a pretty good job getting up the thatch.I also have a befco york rake that I use.Hopefully the JD X740 will arrive next week sometime.coobie

The tractor in that picture.....has it ever mowed grass??? Or was that the day you brought it home? It looks so clean!

What kind of standard are the diesels in the x700 series built to? Could a person get 5,000 hours out of it?
