. . . I'm am wanting to add coulters in front of the rippers... the coulters will cut the sod and hopefully not tear up so bad for hay field renovation. . .

I admire your DIY attitude, but I just bought one. I let somebody else do the "figgerin'."

Note the coulters in front of each tooth, and the shear bolts on the shanks. You have the right idea.

I love those hay kings !!! I've never used one but looking at them they must do the job. I want those coulters.

That is a fine looking build--and it certainly does the job. Around here we only need to go 12"-14" to shatter the hardpan and improve drainage. The fear is too much depth in the wrong ground can "invert" the topsoil and that should be avoided. Good job, good results and happy it worked for you.

Wow nice build!!:licking: I wonder if the shanks had more forward angle if the HP requirement might be reduced to make it easier on the tractor. Also if the shanks were drill and bolted on instead, it could give you some adjustment for angle and the bolts could serve as "shear" pins. Just an idea.
Either way I like the build.

I slept on it and am thinking the same ... my next move along with the coulters is to cut the shank ... not sure where yet. At that cut I can angle the lower part of the rippers and use grade 5 bolts.... just bolt the cutoff part to the side .... Gotta study what angle to put them.

I didn't know coulters where going to be so hard to find ... I thought surely there would be some used ones around.

I think that is a nice build.:thumbsup:

About the shank might want to consider a parabolic design. Very popular for large V ripper plows.

For Coulters, do you have any implement salvage/grave yards or used implement dealers in your area? Here in the corn belt we have several and if you willing to dig through their scrap piles you can some times find coulters etc..

Just a thought and nice build from scrap. Usually when I am done the scrap looks like a bigger pile of scrap....

No such thing around me. The corn belt ... man the few times I've driven thru your country its like a couple equipment dealers in every town.

Once in Walnut Grove Mn ... I spent hours walking thru the used equipment.
