The tractor, if loaded right, should put most of the weight on the trailer axles. You do want a little weight on the truck, as it rides better that way. Your 1500 will do just fine. Make sure you hit the tow/ haul button if you got one. If you can find a 30-40 horse tractor, I think you'll be fine. Most tractors that have around 40 horse will lift about 1800 lbs. at the pins. You can find good used tractors around 5k all over. That means a whole lot more equipment you get to buy! If you go look at one, when you get there, try to start it. If it's already warm, they may be hiding something, like using starting fluid or having to jump start it. Put an implement on the three point and see how it lifts. Those are just a couple things to look for. Good luck!

Why is the JD 5045 cheaper than the 4000 and 3000 series?

looks like just an old base rugged design tractor with the basics to me. just like the 4000 and 3000 series have. the 3000 and 4000 series have a low priced model too 3005 model as opposed to a 3320 3520 or 3720. just as the 5000 series have.

It's an "economy" model tractor. Metal fenders, basic dry-clutch transmission - no frills -work tractor.

It's a full blown utility sized tractor, however. Considerably larger than either the 3000 or 4000 series of tractors. Cat I/II 3pt implements. You could reliably put up your own baled hay with that sized machine - although the 5055(D/E) would give you a better Hp "comfort margin".

I sure wish I could be of more help, but the bottom line is that there are a sack full of tractors from small to large that will do the things you need done both new and used. Even narrowing it down to 30-40 leaves a lot of variables.

If you have no or limited experience with tractors, spend a few bucks to rent something to get a baseline for comparison.

A lot is going to depend on how much time you can/want to spend in the seat.

I prefer Kubota, but own different brands and one is about as good as the other; when buying used, we don't much care about the color.

Good luck.

My suggestion would be a 2012 JD 3038e. It is a nice size with good power. Hydro trans for ease of operation With only five trees to mow around, a rear 72" mower will work just great for you. The downsides to this model are no mid PTO option and non removable FEL. I'm pretty sure it will fall right into your budget.

Hello Everyone,

Here is my first post. Thank you for all of your help and for having this site up.

I am very sorry I have to ask the question again but my time is limited by my 2 year old (who can't seem to let me work on the computer), work, and our new 10 acres. I have learned a lot from what I have found though.

Like I said, I have 10 acres. It breaks down to 1 acre for the house, 1 acre pond, and the rest is mostly clear cut cow pasture. The pasture could probably be cut with a grooming mower set on high. There are only five trees and the ground has about a 1-2 degree slope no hills.

I will be running some cattle, will keep 10-20 chickens and do 1-2 acres planting. Probably 1/4 acre planting this year because we are so behind on everything else.

Now that you have some background on the property and some of my doings here are my final requirements and questions.

How much can the loaders on the models you suggest lift? Been having a hard time nailing that down.

I need to mow 8 acres
till or disc 1-2
move purchased hay (hope I don't really need to buy any)(I understand square may be my only option)
Move sand and dirt for various land improvements
Maybe move my fence one day

My dad had old ford I used to have fun with but it has been a long time since then. I am a little green but will check all brands. I would like to stay under 20 to 22 with implements.

I have looked at just about everything on the following website Brookside Equipment Sales, Inc. - Brookside's Tractor Package Lineup

I have an almost identical situation--10 acres flat pasture that includes 6 acre hayfield, about 1.5 acre almond orchard and the remainder buildings and landscaping. My big tractor is a 2008 Mahindra 5525 (54 hp engine, 45 hp pto, 2WD, power steering, gear tranny 8F/2R, triple rear hydraulic remotes) with the ML250 FEL (6-ft wide bucket, 2950 lb lift to 10.5 ft height, skid steer quick attach feature). Cost: about $19K new. I mow with a 6-ft wide Hawkline rotary mower (aka bush hog, brush hog, shredder, slasher) that cost $1150 (bought as part of the 5525 deal).

Some folks might think this tractor is oversize for just 10 acres, but I put in 6 acres of hay with it and it's the right size as far as I'm concerned. It's really aggrevating to realize that you didn't buy large enough tractor.

Good luck

That's my problem, Too many options!

I feel your pain. I have been running tractors for over fifty years and on two occasions not too many years ago, after doing all my research, I bought different size tractors than I thought I "needed/wanted".

On one, I didn't want to spend the money on a cab or get a tractor that big, but my wife insisted and turns out one of the best things I ever did.

On another I wanted bigger and bought smaller.

Like I said though, with such broad parameters it is hard to pick a bad one.
