What you really need to decide is if you want a economy tractor, or a feature tractor. Any of the xx20 Deere compacts and larger M series Deere are more of the feature tractors, and same goes true with other brands, just different naming. The feature tractor you'll get a lot more comfort, a HST transmission, nice big easy to read gages, the tractor will be more "modern" and electrical. You can get an economy tractor for a lot less that will do nearly the same job but with a little more work on your part. Won't quite have all the gizmos and will be more like an older tractor that was very basic. All tractor manufactures make both types of models, the "economy" and the "feature" tractor. Being new to this stuff the feature tractor is definitely a lot easier to operate and will be able to "self diagnose" a lot of problems where the economy is a lot easier to operate on in general. You being on a budget the economy would definitely fit your budget better, but if your about comfort then a used tractor will do just as well. I think you need to pick which type of tractor and compare the models accordingly.

Well I went to test drive just about all the Deere tractors my local dealer had. 2000 series would be a great mower but not really a perfect choice for me. 3320 and 3032 were great until I got on the 5045d. 3320 is a little more than I want to pay when it came to the dealer made packages available. 3032 was about 21000 and the 5045d was about 25000.

If I stick with Deere, does anyone think the 5045 is too big for 10 acres?

How much land you have doesnt matter as much as what you plan to do with it. If you have a lot of work planned the 5045 will definitely make short work of it as it is much more tractor. But if you are doing mostly general stuff remember there is such a thing as too much tractor and where the "luxury" tractor of 3x20 and the HST is nice. If where your going will hold the larger 5045 then it is a viable option.

Tractor well going to say something in the 35 to 45 hp range(not going to suggest brand) but will say maybe get 3point sprayer 100/200gallon, cows will keep grass ate down(there are chemicals safe to spray weeds while cattle are on that dont require a liscence)(ALSO have green chemicals). Not having to mow a bunch a weeds, you could buy a finish mower for the yard and some touch up in pasture if needed. Having chickens well you have your own fertilizer, maybe pick up an old manure spreader,so you can spred litter in your cattle pastures(when you clean out chicken house, just throw in spredder and tarp till full). If your going to garden or do any seed planting I would get a tiller, work alot better than disc..

My opinion the 5045 is to big for 10ac.,if you was doing hay production yourself would be different story.I suggest same hp in a smaller frame

I have a 5045D and absolutely LOVE it! I have ten acres that I farm, (total 13), but the 5045D is not too big at all.

I've used it for hay, tilling, mowing you name it. Very strong and well-built...

Thanks for the info. I had a blast at the dealer with it. I think I'm sold.

Just a little perspective on tractor size, I do everything you describe on our farm (12ac) with my little B3200 Kubota. IIRC it is about the size of a Deere 2720. It works great for every thing from cleaning out the barn, hauling manure, plow/disc/tilling the garden, hauling firewood, bush hogging, to mowing, tedding and raking hay. It is too small to run a baler however (which is easy to hire out if you need.)

Now with that said, I have access to plenty of larger tractors at our family farm(few hundred acres), but rarely need them. We do have a 5045e there and while it is a nice size tractor for haymaking, etc, It is a bit cumbersome for many of the other 'farmyard' and around the house related tasks. On a 10ac plot it is about as big of a tractor as I'd want, and even then I'd want a smaller companion to it. IMO something in the 3000 Deere line would be a good compromise.

For some reason everyone nowadays wants to get the absolute biggest tractor they can afford. Having been in farming/construction my whole life I can tell you that there are many times when too big of a tractor is more of a hindrance than too small of one.

Agree completely and we have everything from 23 to 85 HP. Our L5030 will do everything we do with the M8540, just a bit slower, but there are places the M8540 is either useless or more work than a small tractor and then there are places the 50 HP is a pain and we get out the 25HP.

Hey 2ACR, since we are neighbors, drive down and put a 5045D through it's paces. There's always something to do!!

In all seriousness, I would not mind having a little subcompact with a loader around for tight spaces. But for my primary tractor, bigger is better!

Thanks guys. I'm still waiting for the old house to sell before I can make a purchase, so I have time. Well, time is forced upon me.

Jim

As soon as work slows down a little i would love to get some seat time and help you out in the process. Company is trying to pump out 5 rigs a month until the end of march. We aren't really staffed for that which gives me loads of overtime but less time with my family and toys.
