"He loved riding his Harley..."

Guys, I just read another obituary in today's newspaper that contained that information about the deceased. When I think back about I have read a great many of them that echoed the same sentiment, that the person who recently died was very much attached to his HARLEY-DAVIDSON (emphasis added) but I don't recall ever reading one that mentioned another brand name of motorcycle (Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Triumph, etc).

Has anyone else?

No I sure can't and this hits close to home as I had to give up riding my Harley this year and gave it to my son. My son in law's father had to do the same thing.

I have owned a lot of different motorcycles starting in 1965 and ending this year, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki, Ossa, Triumph and Harley.

As a young man, you couldn't give me a Harley, just too slow and unwieldy, I wanted something a lot faster, more nimble etc.

The older I got the less important those things were taking a back seat, to comfort, style, resale value and just pure pride of ownership.

There is just simply something different about a Harley and I can't really explain it.

And no I was not the old guy in leathers, do rag, no helmet, chains hanging off of him trying to pretend to be something I wasn't; don't have a tattoo any where, yeah I wore leather, but not the type one thinks of and I don't own a piece of clothing with Harley Davidson emblazoned on it, not that there is anything wrong with that.

In fact, a reclining computer gas chair would be even better, as I spend so much time on the darn computer getting my fix of TBN

I've owned one Zundapp, one Yamaha, one BMW, and three Hondas. I've ridden Harleys that belonged to someone else, but you couldn't give me one of those noisy, vibrating contraptions.:laughing: The ideal motorcycle to me would be one that runs so quiet you'd have to look at the tachometer to tell if the engine was running. And of course the same for cars.

Actually, JDgreen227's 4210 is a Deere built machine. Just happens to have a Yanmar engine.

I like Harleys. I went toward more of an old school look. Bored and stroked the motor to 110 inches and almost doubled the power. Yeah, it's loud.

Me too. The thing putting me off motorcycles is the fact they are so loud! My neighbour has one and always feels the need to rev the engine up to red-line multiple times at 7AM before leaving for work.

When it comes to motorbikes I'm very much a Honda person... and preferably a big single cylinder one at that...

However.. if in my obituary a statement is made about loyalty to a machine, I think I'll have wasted my life.

That is a nice looking bike!

I used to like loud pipes. Now I have tinnitus and hearing loss in my right ear.

I like a mild pipe better now. One it is quieter. Two, a little back-pressure gives a more responsive bottom end. Three, loud and/or open pipes are really only good for top-end/redline.

As much as I really like bikes(have and continue to ride, 30 years now, mostly Harley FXRS that still ride), I REALLY dont want to hear other peoples pipes, have my windows rattled, or have to listen to someone else bike while inside my own house.

The same goes for people that have four 15" subwoofers and 1000 watts of power booming down the road. How **$%&!@#$*** inconsiderate and obnoxious! I REALLY REALLY dont want to listen to a subwoofer that rattles my windows, you can hear a mile away, and is louder than a Harley with drag pipes!

Or worse, I have been passed by a couple Harley baggers with real loud pipes, and their hard saddle bags filled the biggest amps and subwoofers that will fit!

I really like the sound of some mild pipes on a Harley with a cam and extra compression. Or, a mild pipe on any year Turbo Cummins. Or, a '70 Roadrunner with a nice 440 in it. Or, as much as I like Harleys, a Suzuki GSRX 1150 with a Kerker header...

But I DONT want to listen to them while in my car, in my truck, or while trying to get the kid to bed, or in my living room...

I think they mention Harleys in the obit because it's still a "status" thing for some. Not much status in Yamaha or Honda. LoL
I started riding H-D's in the 70's for the opposite reason; no one thought much of them. But I liked the torque. They never fit me well physically so I gave them up about 10 years ago. A few years later I decided to try a Yamaha just to see if I would like it. I wish I had tried one earlier! LoL I guess my obit will be "he enjoyed riding his Road Star!"

Beautiful bike, but what's with the ape hangars....my last bike, a stock Honda 450, I purchased used and I hated the ape hangars the prior owner had installed...NO CONTROL.

My dad loved to ride his Harley,a drunk driver took his life while he was on his....

I'm sorry to hear that.

I can't understand people who drink and drive.

It is simple - Drink and don't drive, or don't drink and drive.
