First Use of FEL Snowplow

I dont understand what your issues are with the loader mounted plow. Ive now used mine 5 times, and i have no chain on mine. It does not ever try and dig in while plowing UNLESS, I tilt the blade too much one way or the other. As long as i leave it totally level (i have a level indicator tube) it never tries to dig in. I have the skid shoes set to leave 1" of snow.

Works flawlessly.

Do you leave the loader in "Float", Greg?
I'm thinking the OP is using down pressure and his plow may not have float built into the frame.

Oh, yes i leave mine in float only.

The only time i use down pressure was to move a bas spot of ice.

Oh, and Roy, you'll be pleased to know...i had to put the chains back on.... darn

But the good thing is it took alot less time the 2nd time around. Probably 1/2 the time it took me last time.

We finally got some snow so I gave it another try. Mixed results. My FEL plow work best when I back dragged. I am having difficulty understanding the whole chain thing. There must be something to it because I've noticed most truck plows have a chain. I'll get thru this year but I need to have this figured out by next year. My blade digs in float mode.
Truck plows only have the weight of the blade on them. They only set down until it has some slack in the chain.
Hold they loader arms up slightly and only let the weight of the plow set on the on the ground with a little slack in the chain.
Using float mode on dirt/gravel you are putting to much weight on the blade causing it to dig in, especially on unfrozen ground.
I've been plowing snow for years with a loader mounted snow blade and I have no problems at all, they work very well.
I've tryed plowing with the loader in float mode. It does not work for me.
Lighten up on the weight on the plow.

Practice makes perfect, eh?

And, I had an opportunity to use my warning lamp yesterday while I was plowing out front of the drive!!!

hmm, weird. I guess i can see why it wont work in unfrozen ground, but we hardly ever have unfrozen ground thru winter here in N. Idaho (this season is first time ive had it in 16 years). And ive only used the plow 5 times so far, but there absolutely NO digging in or gravel being moved. I have a nice layer of snow remaining. And i leave it in full float mode

Maybe your driveway is packed down better or has better drainage. Mine's ok in most areas but I have some soft areas that take more care even with my truck plow. i just lift it a bit in those areas.

OK, that makes sense. The light bulb finally came on, now I understand the purpose of the chain. It allows the plow to float by removing the load caused by the loader arms. Now I just have to figure out what I connect the chain to.

Can you post a picture of your plow setup?
Maybe someone here can help with the chain connection.

What helps with the roads i plow is that there all pretty much flat. No ditches or rise and falls.

So that might make a big difference.
