LOL, true but I dont usually take equipment in to the hole that shouldnt be there & gettin a 4000lb machine out is much easier than a larger one!

True

I know just the difference in messing with tracks is night & day between the 2 machines & with only a 2000lb difference........Ill change tracks on the struck any day over a JD 440 or 450.........I guess the key is dont break down? boy if that was only possible?

LXT......

You probably know this, but an ounce of prevention can be well worth its weight, especially when it comes to tracked machines.:)

Absolutely, but they dont usually break or need that quick repair when you are in close proximity to the truck, its when you get involved that they show you whos boss.

Maintenance is a big thing on a track machine & the bigger the machine.....well lets just say a 2 ton floor jack wont do much & if Maint requires pulling a part.........you better have another machine of equal size to aide you! for the non D-9 guys like my self....I look at the machine with maintenance in mind & the ease of doing it.

I've always been horrified of getting a dozer stuck. I've figured out with my little dozer and the swamp tracks, you would almost have to try and stick it, it's next to impossible. A bigger machine, I'm not so sure...

Many years ago after working all day on a pond bank I got my 450 REALLY stuck. It was hot, I was hot and mad too. Finally after about an hour trying to get it out I went by the local watering hole and had two beers (back then a beer was 45 cents) when asked why I was in so early I replied "because it is the cheapest thing I can do right now". :D

Let everything cool off and the water drain back and it popped right out the next morning. I had LGP tracks and can tell you a dozer is easy to stick, and can be hard to get out. One of the things I hope I have learned is to know when to wait for better weather conditions..

You're correct that's why I own a nortrac dozer and really enjoy it  I have had to work on it and have had it VERY stuck, my fault on both issue's. I will say after running dozers, it's when you think you won't get stuck, that's when you do :confused2::drool:

Sure, it's just a Komatsu D20p-6. The last 2 pics are the kind of areas I've been working in. It's what we call "sloughs" here in Louisiana. It's generally a bottomless little bayou. Put it this way, my 4wd tractor and Arctic Cat 650 4x4 with 28" mud tires would both get stuck where the little dozer keeps pushing mud!

Last time I had the D3 stuck was at the bottom of a sandy like ravine... just couldn't get out and it was way down there.

All I could do was call it a day and wait for a good rain to add moisture to firm up the ground... didn't have anything big enough to even try moving it.

I also find it much more mentally challenging working on hillsides... if I feel like I'm getting a little sloppy after 4 or 5 hours... I give it a rest.

Impressive!

And those are the "swamp tracks"?

Yeah, or technically pyramid tracks. The P designation in D20p is for the tracks it came with. Down here most people call it swamp tracks. My buddy said they had an old case with 36" tracks years ago! He said they were really too wide though, they cut them down and it still did fine in the nasty stuff.
