I'm looking at buying a John Deere 4005. Can anyone tell me how tall their tractor measures from ground to the top of ROPS with industrial tires? How about ag tires? Also I've read posts and noticed this on an older JD 650 that to shift gears, you have to back down the rpms. Its suppose to be partial syncro, so you can shift on the fly just not change ranges or direction, right?

i just got a new one 2 months ago, the jd book says is 85 ins. so i went out to the barn and i get 84 ins. yes you can shift without slowing down. i traded in a 2005 790 on the 4005. it has a lot more weight and power and better hydraulics. i realy likeit. i forgot it has r4 tires.

I would suggest moving into a 4105 at the very minimum, if not a 4320. The 4005 is just way to basic, but that's just my opinion.

i bought mine last spring. i've been very happy with it. it seem's to have alot of power for it's size. loader work is a little slower, but i'm usually not in that big of a hurry anyway. if i am i'll just use one of the bigger tractors. i used it last summer in the hay fields to rake and tedd the hay. that helps to keep hours off of the bigger tractors. fun little tractor!!!!

I can't measure my rops right now, but it's supposed to be 85 - if the other guy had 84 with R4s then maybe 85 is with R1. If no one else gets a measurement with R1 I'll post one when I can. I got upset trying to skid logs when my 790 R4 tires kept filling up with mud so I got R1s on the 4005. I wish I could have kept both machines :( You are correct about the shifting - you can shift on the go between the three forward gears in each range. You need to stop to shift between ranges or between forward and reverse. I've had some mixed results with shift on the go...sometimes there is a slight grinding and perhaps it is the RPM issue.

All the more reason to buy the 4005.

they gave me 10,300 and free wheel weights for it. it makes the 790 small. i like it but we have had no snow so i could play with it.

Wow, that's a good price. Was that tractor alone or with a FEL or BH ?

My 790 just clears the garage opening by a inch with the BH roll bar height extender.

If a 4005 with BH has this same extension, I'm going to have the same concerns as nwalabama.
