From the comments of many of you, I guess I would never thought I'd say this, but the west side of South Bend, Indiana, with 40% vacant housing and umpteen % unemployment ain't lookin' so hostile anymore compared to the back woods of the areas some of you are discussing.

When I was a kid, we would get several tresspassers each year on my parent's property. We'd just ask them to leave via the driveway and they would. In all those years we only had one incident involving a sword in the lake, my father with his .45, the police, and two wet guys in handcuffs on the 6 o'clock news.

Brin - I promise I don't mean to be picking on you, but when I read the original post, it came across to me as if you were extremely upset and willing to be extremely hostile, rather than give the perpetrator the benefit of the doubt.

FWIW, I didn't detect anything "hostile", a legit voicing of one's concerns to like minded folks at the coffee table is all... So much is assumed in forumns and usually not what the author meant, trust me, I know,

I am a Land Surveyor, and Brin, you handled the situation perfectly. Its best not to let your emotions get the best of you. It all worked out in the end.

As a side note, I don't know what it is, but boundarys and property can get very emtional for some people. People will get very upset if they think someone is on their property. I've seen it time and again, and it can get really silly with grown men acting like little kids fighting over a piece of candy. Boundary disputes are also expensive and I've been involved in a few. I would say half of the disputes I've been involved really have nothing to do with the boundaries. People have some kind of other personal grudge, and a boundary dispute is just a way to manifest the other personal disputes.

Agreed - it's hard to be sure what emotion is being conveyed - that is a problem with forums when you can't hear voice inflection and see body language.

At any rate, it seems done and over with no lasting harm (except maybe a staples in trees, and I don't know anything about that). I know I nail lots of fencing to trees in the boundaries around our farm, but they're not veneer grade or anything like that.

Good luck and take care.

Glad it turned out well.

I always find that it is best to give someone the benefit of the doubt until you know otherwise. If they are good people you will not risk offending them with an over reaction. If they are not good people you will find out soon enough and then you can be satisfied that you at least gave them a chance before they get what they deserve.

Trees and property can be replaced or repaired. What matters most can not. (Time, Stress, Your Health, Your family)

Maybe you and the neighbours will laugh about this over beers sometime.

Good Luck

I would be inclined to go and check those trees with a metal detector to ensure that they didn't break/miss a staple in one of them.

OK MossRoads....I only add this to offer you some advice. Never take your wife into an unknown situation. Never assume all people are nice, reasonable people. This is Rural Georgia...I venture to say it is somewhat different than where you live...I'm just sayin' Thanks for clarifying...:)

Well, I did not detect any hostility in your op but I did detect some need for anger management lessons coming from Moss Road. He sounded like he wanted to get started on one big tear. I think you handled two situations well here.

Being a rental place,I would have def.had a fence put up.If you say doing it cause the driveway, back it off a foot, see if they will go in on half may could put a nice looking wood fence.Seems like if this tenant doesnt work out,may get into samething with next one, then next one,you get the point....

I am glad it seems it will work out. It's amazing how sensitive we all are to "our property."

Hopefully this gets resolved soon. A good neighbor is a valuable thing, hopefully it turns out that way.

I am always suspect of renters though, sad to admit.

I used to be suspicious of renters in the neighborhood. Then one day I was shoveling out the elderly crippled lady's walk next door during a blizzard and the renter across the street (single woman with a young son) sent her son over to help with a cup of hot chocolate for me she had made (Mexican style with hot pepper flakes in it) as a way of thanking me for what I was doing. That is the sum total of thanks I got for shoveling that lady's walk all those winters, but I was touched at the gesture and appreciated the help. I think that was almost the only time anyone helped out with shoveling tht lady's walk.

Guess I'm getting soft in my old age.
