Roy....BTW, I can't say I have the hots for a suppressor, but I'd sure like a 10" barrelled upper for my AR-15. Like you, I don't much care for "Big Bro" snooping around...

Just keep in mind the physical attributes of a 'supressor', aka Muffler....

An oversize tube with discs of sound absorbing material inside and a bore through those discs equal to the diameter of the projectile...

Given those parameters...What do you imagine that you could fabricate a muffler out of that's a common penumatic industrial part.... and cheap too???????

I guess there are a number of designs on the internet...just depends on your fabrication skills.
You'd have to buy a threaded barrel too, of course, unless you can thread it yourself.

My son had a 9" on his when he was on the SWAT team and I really liked it. He still has the upper, it just can't be on a gun.

Just remember that if you (or he) has another AR-15 in the house, it could be what's called "constructive possession" (something like that).
That means if you have a shortie in the house, with another standard AR-15 (with an upper), you could assemble the shortie upper and AR-15 lower into an unregistered SBR.
I know it's unAmerican and makes no sense...but it is the BATF, after all...

I do like probably like most of you remember the silencer kits that could be legally purchased up until 1986 (NFA) at gun shows etc.

You could buy the adapters with them to clamp on a bull barrel Ruger .22 for instance (there were a bunch they made them for) these adapters had the threads on them and were held on with a set screw very simple and effective.

You cant even own them now in pieces sad because they were less than a hundred bucks at the time. They were the same washer and spring wipe-less technology is what is being sold now for a grand and up its all paperwork and regs add "value". :laughing:

edit: I just remembered those kits didn't have the tube they had the guts and ends and maybe some assembly instructions but the tube at that point in time was the regulated piece from my recollection anyway. In 86 they redefined the parts also maybe I am off but thats what I seem to recal. fwtw

He and his brother plan on building a pistol receiver from a kit or buying one already assembled. We understand the BATFE interpretation once a rifle always a rifle, so the receiver would have to be "virgin" or built as a pistol. Or since he is now back in college, he may sell it for tuition money.

Heck, I might even pay for him to register it if he wants, who knows.

I dealt with BATFE most of my life and realize how complicated the rules are as sometimes two agents will view it a bit differently.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with that post. I did some investigation on SBRs a while back. Although I've got a hankering for one...guess I don't have enough of a hankering to spend the money.

Roy, you are NOT helping me stay out of the gun store. I like the piston driven system on the Rock River and Sig much more than the gas operated AR platform; course there is that whole money thing.:laughing:

That goes for me too. I of course liked the pistol but browsed the even more and discovered that they make a left handed AR. I just so happen to shoot left handed so naturally I am wanting one! Thanks Roy

I just can't get excited about that style of firearm. What do you do with it?... But then, I've never warmed up to anything festooned with Picatinny rails on every side... One rail, on top is sufficient, for scope mounting

I like some beauty somewhere..... Those things have none. Testosterone maybe, beauty no.....

Just don't know what excites people about those tinngs.....

That's news to me!!
I also shoot left handed...when I bought my RRA rifle, I thought about a Stag since they were they only ones with LH uppers (at the time).

I prefer the AR-15 a bit leaner (less stuff hanging off it), but it is an outstanding platform. I wouldn't mind a forward grip, but that's about it.
However, some guys dress their Harleys, some guys dress their rifles...some guys even dress their tractors.
