What do you guys think to drum mowers?

If you had a blank peice of paper what features would you give the drum mower? (I think I'd want a hydraulic lift and some sort of safety mechanism to protect the drums from hitting objects).

I'v used drum mowers in the past for cutting hay, and just wondered what the general thoughts on them were!

The main rule to follow is to buy drum mowers made in Italy or New Zeland. Ken Sweet

Myself as well as Ken offer good durable Drum Mowers, gaurunteed not to clog up, maintenance and parts are relatively cheap, they will mow as fast as you can stay on the tractor seat! Best Mowers ever! although they do not mow a big enough swath but you can make up the time in the quickness that you can mow on and they need low horsepower run wich means less fuel and less money!

So, what's the problem with the Turkish drum mowers? Design? Operation? Reliability? Durability? Ease of maintenance/service? Parts availability?

I have had new Turkish machines on my lot 1 time. Being a machinest/tool and die maker, I saw enough that I could not promote the products. Ken Sweet

In your imagination, think of all the things you would not like to see in a product? Ken Sweet

Castings with excess material sloughing at the casting seam... irregular holes and inconsistent mounting areas with poor bearing seats and seals...

Use of cast iron in high stress locations when steel or cast steel should have been used..

As a point of information - what's the $2.00 take-home - difference between disc mowers and drum mowers??

Thanks.

I have a PZ and have had 3 Deutz fahr and 4 of the unifarm claas zetor models.
I am looking for a used drum mower in the 7 ft range now.

The primary reason I use drum mowers is less damage from rock and obstructions on the new hay land of the south (former crp or land that was just bushhogged and is now poor hay ground) yes theres lots of competiition for hay land from the new farmers feeding $2 /# calves with sedgegrass. Most all the hay land I cut on is rocky and imperfect.

The class unifarm zetor model was only imported 1 year although they sold for 2 or 3 in the USA. The problem is it had 3 drum-saucers and the trough that the drive line ran it would warp or twist slightly.

The PZ is now a part of vicon and they are selling some in the south as Vicon PZ Greenland or some name like that. some 7 ft models are out there.

The deutz Fahr models are 30 years old and not supported anymore except for surface wear parts that Sweet and CCM can supply.

Im looking for a newer 7 ft. CCM, Reese PZ or Galfre. Im fine with manually putting the cuter in position and my tractors could run 2 at a time if I could made a dolly to pully them. Yes a dolly like the double pull sickle mowers use.

Thanks for the replies guys. I've seen those Reese mowers on the net, look like a pretty solid product to me. Pz sound like a good choice, after doing some research I found that these guys were the inventors of the drum mower!

I like the idea of having a drum mower that you can use on either side of the tractor, giving you the option to run a wider width cut.

Would you say belts are a good idea, or would a solid drive shaft be a better idea? (I've noticed most seem to be V belt driven from the PTO, then shaft driven drums). Not sure which would be better to go for? Or is there any other clever way some manufactures make the drums whiz around?

I bought one of your drum mowers from your dealer near Nicholasville KY last spring. I mowed a total of 50 acres with it last season. So far I've been very happy with it. Just one question. They didn't have a manual. They told me they would get me one and mail it to me but, never did. What's the chance you could send me one? It's a 165.

I'd get the operator, service and parts manuals for your mower. Drum mowers are not that complex, but it's helpful to have the manuals when you need to do maintenance/repair work on it.

A drum mower is on this year's tractor implement shopping list--maybe a birthday present to myself :D.
