That is what i am hoping for. It sat for a long time. Keeping fingers crossed. Ive built many motors and never encountered this.

It doesn't take much water to make the oil look messy..I found this once with Castrol GTX...It looked like a skim layer of pancake batter once it mixed...Fingers crossed for you.

It is sitting in my dirt floor tractor barn, an unconditioned space.

(water) pull the oil plug and let drain for a couple days, with the drain plug out put a clean pan for catching fill the rad and pressure it 10 pounds watch the pan check for water or anti freeze in the pan. the if you got water pull the engine, < I would think a gasket.

Not to go off topic, but :D

Did you see the article maybe a year ago in Hot Rod or one of those mags, about the guy who put a tweaked up Duramax/Allison in a 70ish Chevelle? Was supposed to be really fast, and got amazing fuel mileage.

Wouldn't that be cool, a 11 second Chevelle that got 28mpg!

When i move it into my new shop, i plan to tear the motor down, upgrade the cam from 272 to 292, increase the stall 1500 rpm to 3500 and add a set of eagle (dart) heads. This should get me easily into the 12s, which is my goal for this motor. I have plans for either a 540 or 596 and am searching for the block now. I will update the progress.

I would be willing to bet that the intake gaskets are not sealing the water crossovers at the ends of the cylinder heads. When you are using 40 year old parts, often sourced from different people, it is very easy to end up with a mis matched intake and head combo, as many times over the years the heads have been resurfaced. If heads are milled on a v8, the intake must also be machined on the bottom to compensate for the heads sitting a little lower. Many times, thicker intake gaskets must also be used. When buying parts second, third, fourth hand etc, it is often hard to get reliable info from the seller as to how much machine work has been done over the years. Post up some pics of that chevelle !!!
Here is a crappy phone pic of my 71 SS

Adding water and pressurizing the cooling system (mentioned before) is where I'd start. If you have a casting or gasket leak you should see it on the guage right off (and may be able to hear it).
