JB, I have a Sig P229DAK instead of the 226. The 229 came originally with three 13 RD magazines. Now if I tell you why I ordered the others, you'll think I'm nuts, and you'll probably be right. But since some already think that . . .
If I'd bought the P226 it would have come with 15 RD magazines, but you see the qualifying shooting I do is all in the wrong numbers for 13 RD magazines:
1. 5 rounds from the 25 yard line in 15 seconds; one target turn
2. 5 rounds from the 15 yard line in 10 seconds; one target turn
3. 15 rounds from the 7 yard line; three target turns of 8 seconds each
4. 10 rounds from the 3 yard line; two target turns of 8 seconds each (one handed, first strong hand, then weak hand)
5. 15 rounds from the 7 yard line in 25 seconds; one target turn; reload twice; i.e. only 5 rounds per magazine allowed.
Now that last 15 rounds, retirees are allowed to use 7 and 8 rounds per magazine so they only have to reload once instead of twice. At each stage, we start with a holstered weapon until the target turns (or starts to turn). Now between stages, they'll allow us time to reload magazines. But in each stage, it's your own problem. And I never like to have anyone waiting on me. In stage #3, I have to change magazines since I don't have 15 rounds in one magazine at this time. But with a 17 RD magazine, loaded with 15, I'll save my self some time next time.
Foolish? Of course. Isn't most of what we spend one firearms and accessories foolish?
To change the topic a little bit . . . in spite of growing up in a house with always loaded handguns, our just turned 46 year old daughter had never shot one and last month told me she'd like to try that. So today, I took her to the indoor range at Bass Pro and let her shoot the 9 mm Sig, the K model S&W .38 and the Chief special S&W .38. And would you believe she liked the little Chief best?
