Looking for USED F-350 - Which year/engine/model is best?

Unless, you tow heavy, I'd consider the 3.73 rear end a big plus. My truck has the 4.10 rear end and I wish it was a 3.73.

that's the issue.. if he tows.. i'd want 4.10 vs 3.73

in no towing.. 3.73 would be great..

Long ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I owned a 1969 F250 390 V8, 4x4 5spd with a "brownie".

There were 3 sticks on the hump, transfer case, tranny, and 2spd brownie.

In 4wd low, 1st gear, low, it would climb trees, in 2wd hi, 5th, high I was pulling my stepdad's 18' old and heavy camper trailer over the hills outside of tillamook oregon passing everyone and doing over 80 mph... I made it home to Portland almost an hour ahead of the rest of the family.

That truck was not pretty but it was awesome hauling and 4x4ing... I traded it for a lifted '73 Bronco with a PTO winch and a 302 V8 (Dang I miss that Bronco now).

I believe the set up was the brownie was between the transmission and the xfer case, it was just a Hi/Lo box... Can such be found today?

I will be pulling my tractor and 3-5 horses, but I will also be just driving around back and forth to work.

Just a thought.

i have heard there were essentially stepup/down boxes giving you essentially a 2 spd rear end.

I briefly looked over the lit when i got my 450 with a 4.88 rear...

I've got a 2006 F-350 dually 6.0. I have to agree with the posted that stated you either get a good one or a bad one....I believe the 05's and 6's had more bugs worked out than the first few years. I also believe there are MANY more good ones than bad ones....it's like putting a few drops of red dye into a tank of diesel.....the whole tank is tagged....:laughing:

I would look for a deal on the 05/06, or back to the last year 7.3's....prices should be coming down as our current admnistration has shared the good news of rising fuel prices. (again)

Same here. Had 2 of them, a 04 and a 06. Just have the 06 now. I also had a 99 7.3l and it was basically flawless but did not have near the power of the 6.0

my 05 Ford (6.0) has tremendous pulling power while hauling my 30' horse trailer....it amazes me how it accelerates uphill. my 94 dodge sure never did that.

I stumbled across a trade in a few years ago at work. A friend of mine traded in his '03 7.3 F350 4X4. At the time it had 56,000 miles. It is a super cab long bed with the FX4 package. He traded it that morning, and I bought it that afternoon. When I got home my father stopped by to see it and asked, what are you planning to tow with that? My answer was, pretty much what ever I want to. It now has 108,000 miles on it. I wouldn't sell it for $25,000. I do most of my running around on a little '95 Ranger with a 4 cyl and a 5 speed to save on gas. But I have "Brutus" for the bigger jobs. My plan was to buy it, and keep it the rest of my life. I've never had any major issues with it, and don't expect to. I've seen several of the engines with 500,000 to 750,000 miles on them. We've had a couple with over a million come into the shop. Of course, you can't expect that kind of mileage without some issues, but they are very capable. I try to drive it a least once a week or so, just to keep the fluids stirred up and the batteries in good shape.
