Powerhorse 3 pt. log splitter design flaw

/ Powerhorse 3 pt. log splitter design flaw #21
I like mine but it broke where the hydro cylinder mounts in the front and in the back. It split where the pins go through the housing. I welded it back and reinforced it with some round steel bars. Had it hooked to my 75 hp Montana just running at around 750 rpm when I tried to split a piece of oak with a knot. This is a new splitter, only used it about a week before it broke. Now its better than it was when I bought it.

I see you took the idea of flipping the arms over and made a solution out of a problem.
Nice work, Ion. Simple, cheap & effective - what's not to like?

Ion !!! That was good thinking to flip the stock arms over, I wish I'd thought of that.

And here I thought the clever part was the vertical extension...

I should note that flipping the arms results in a rather extreme width, something like 30" between the pins I think. Figured you didn't flip them because that was too much for a QuickHitch to accept.

WOW Jim

Great modifications! a couple of questions:

I'm planning on buying the 20 ton 3pt powerhorse to run off of my John Deere 5420. I have dual pumps that produce 15-16 GPM. What kind of cycle time do you think I can expect with this flow rate?
Again, you did a beautiful job on your modificaitons. I'm not as proficient with a welder as that yet but this is a great project to practice on.

Thanks

Eli
Check out the Wallenstein Splitter at Iowa Farm Euipment. Using it on a
5525. We got the extra 4 way wedge and it works great.
Splits vertical or horizontal.

Hi, like many I was frustrated with too much time spent man-handling my PowerHorse splitter and I wanted to be able to pick it up with my quick hitch (iMatch). Here is a picture of the modifications I did... copied some of the ideas above and added a few things also - like lifting rings so I can pick the unit up with a chain and my FEL. Also the 10" pneumatic casters make it easy to roll around for storage.

This is the same one I have. I use a pair of jack stands to store it. It is quick hitch compatible.
