How long can you get out of a set of spark plugs.

Plug wires? I have not owned a vehicle in 10 years with plug wires. Now all them are Coil On Plug design.

GM's have a ~6" plug wires from to coils to the plugs..Coils are mounted on the valve covers..My last two 5.3's and my current 6.2 have this configuration.

Last time I changed a set of plugs was on a '92 Olds 98 that had 80,000 miles on the OEM set and those still looked really good. None of our current vehicles have over 60,000 and I have removed one from each to check the gap and they still looked like new. I think the 100,000 mile interval makes sense.

Amazes me how long today's spark plugs last as I recall replacing them about every 10,000 miles in my '73 Nova.

That seems counter productive. My Ford, Nissan, and BMW have the COP's right on the plug usually held down by a 10 mm bolt.

More parts to fail just seems nuts. I guess that's how they make them though.

The worst thing is that changing plugs these days is not longer a 15 min job. On my Jeep CJ-7 I can change all 6 plugs and do a cap and rotor in under 30 minutes. Cars these days you have to do a search on youtube just to find where the **** the plugs are.

Advantage is that the plugs are still sticking out of the head instead of buried 3 feet into the motor.

on an auto that can go 100K between tuneups.. I feed it a new st.. it's worth it. on a tractor that likes a set every year.. I clean them with an abrasive cleaner and re-use..

Guess you have never been around a Titan or F150. They are right in top and easy to get to. Not a big deal even if they were buried, its a 100,000 mile item.

I changed all the plugs in a Titan in 45 minutes. Took longer to get the tools and a beer than it did to do the work.

The F150's I have done were not bad either except the time I broke off a plug in my BIL's 06 at 115,000 miles. Worked on that one plug for 2 hours and have up. Drove it to the dealer on 7 and $40 later it was fixed.

I wish the ones on my V10 were external..When they go it's going to cost me a fortune...

I've worked on plenty of COP vehicles, I just prefer to see what I'm doing.

If one of those stupid foot-long boots breaks off, it's all kinds of fun to get them out..I just don't like that design. I'll take what's on my GM trucks.

I am happily hoping the same on my Ford V10 E-450....I do have to replace the rotted manifold bolts though..That will be fun. Getting the MH out out of the mine on Friday...A friend has done them before and said he'd do it (a glutton for punishment I guess)...Can't wait to see the cost...

Don't have a choice though. Kind of like the Griswold vacation to WallyWorld.."How much you got son?":mur:
