My DD214 still gets me 10% at HD and LOWES and both work for me. HD has some serious tools and builing materials I can't easily get elsewhere but I have to know what I want and need zero sales assistance because there is none. And you have to be OK with the employee on the edge of societal norms--you know, maybe nose and eye rings or 95% tatoos or two toned hair. Lowes, by design, is more user-friendly and tilted more towards woman but with a strong household and tool presence. Each has it product advantage.

Given my choice, I'm going to LOWES. Sure I get the military 10% from a DD214 but I don't feel I have to wash my hands when I leave. The older sales staff actally has a clue and a work ethic. Plus when the guy thanked me for being a veteran, he meant it. I laughed because the last thing I was called was "baby-killer" and I was a company clerk. If it costs more at LOWES, so be it--competition will keep it fair and the 10% makes it work. Were LOWES to ditch the 10% on my DD214 I would likely switch to HD and maybe wear rubber gloves. Maybe just buy less stuff and save the important things for the veteran days.

I have a couple friends who are brothers 1/2 mile up the road from me. Both are retired military, one USAF and the other Army. Bill, the Army guy has finally been granted 100% disability (Agent orange and such) and he gets a discount at HD but not Lowes, according to him. I will be telling him to review that. As 100% disabled (definitions are not straight forward as he can walk and drive a car) he is tax exempt (saves a bundle on a truck or car) due to disability.

I definitely need to get him to review Lowes' policy as the Lowes is bigger and more fully stocked than the HD which is one of their smaller stores.

"A VETERAN"
"Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." -Author Unknown

Interesting. Im not disagreeing with you, but when i went to buy a freezer I was inpressed with a guy who was more tatoo than ive seen before.BUT he asked to help and i showed him what we wanted and he fetched it. I offered to use the flatbed but he said no he wouldwheel it up front. Then he opened a register to check us out:thumbsup: I said can we get the vet discount he shook his head and off we went.
Oh, wait he wheeled it right out and slid it in the van.:thumbsup:So totally pleased with him despipe the tats. Even my 85 year old dad commented to me.

If you have a Lowe's credit card they will give you another 5% off in addition to the 10% military discount.

I said I would get my first tattoo the day I reenlisted. I almost shipped for six off Nam in 1967, but discovered I was about to be Shanghaied in a way. They tried to coerce me to ship over, which backfired on them.

Anyway, about the tats: We had a short-timer who had gotten transferred to our sub from another because his time was about up and we were headed stateside. Some of the guys took him over on the beach in Pearl and got him totally wasted to celebrate his flight out and leaving the Navy. We'd gotten caught in a typhoon for 13 days and delayed, so he didn't make the trip all the way to Dago. Anyway, the next morning he woke up for his last morning on board with submarine dolphins tattooed all the way across his chest with the name and number of the boat above and below them. The guys got it for him for a going away present after only a few weeks in the crew. I doubt he'll forget that short trip, as it was his only tat.

Just went today (Massachusetts Lowe's) and they allowed a discount with my DD214 saying they shouldn't be doing this due to a policy change, but did allow it today. They said future purchases for the discount would need a photo ID issued from the VA or other military affiliated organization showing proof of service. Didn't mention much else for criteria, such as disability or otherwise.

Seems they are definetly getting more strict with it.My dad still is allowed it and has never showed anthing more than a cap on his head.lol but then he is 88.
But I suspect they reviewed it and saw just how much money was being ''lost'' and wanted to scale back without pissing people off.

I wonder how much they lose if I don't shop there? Without a discount I'm finding some of the nearby lumber yards and hardware stores are fairly competitive pricewise and if I have a construction question I'm more likely to get an answer.
