Thanks Chris - Looks like its pretty heavy too! Good tip with the asbestos....since mine is soaked with oil, I should be ok. I did drain the oil and am trying to salvage the brake pads with brake clean.

But...you think I can get to the seal via the drum??? I was under the impression that the whole final drive had to be removed to get behind it?????

A person could carefully drill and tap a 1/4 x 20 into a couple of the webs and use a steering wheel puller if all else fails a couple holes would not hurt a thing.

My guess Scotty if I was building this tractor would be to make the seal journal on the drum and the seal is in a housing on the tractor and once the drum is off the seal is right there. And my guess is the shaft will need sealer or a gasket between the hub and nut when it goes back together.

edit: I forgot to mention how I take a lot of seals out in case it is something you want to use and please use this at your own risk!!!

I normally use my battery powered screwdriver and I take a drywall screw and either just screw in in the side of the seal if it will w/o running off the side and messing the bore up or the shaft.

Or sometimes I need to drill a small hole so the screw will start then use dikes or a right angle needle nose and pull it out. hth fwtw

Being fairly familiar with the setup and I recall seeing a problem similar to yours. When I was still using the 2500 freq. I had to go check a Parts Dia. and it hit me. I still crs. but the Brake Seal should be a piece of cake. It's the Axel seal and collar thats the royal pita. so be looking hard for leak while it's down and half apart. Your pulling the Axel out and pressing off the seal and collar. Man was I glad they replaced that one when it was refurbished after seeing that.

I just had my drums off my YM 3000, exactly same setup as your 950. Just remove the nut, drum is splined to that shaft, slips off fairly easy. Thinking I did see the seal right behind the drum, but to be honest, both of mine weren't leaking and didn't have to change any seals. Just cleaned up the drums and reinstalled. Thinking if you are going to change a seal, be sure to drain the hyd oil first, could have a mess if you didn't. Use a resporator when working on this stuff, sure to be asbestos.
Chris

I really dont think he will have a problem with fibers with all that oil on every thing. :D

Thanks for the help guys....it is very much appreciated. I got the drum off and I can see the seal. the question is, can I remove it from this side and replace it? Otherwise the whole final drive housing has to be removed and it looks friggin HEAVY. Here are a few shot...let me know what ya think. Also ....is there a good but less expensive alternative to JD Hy Gard fluid?

That looks easy as pie to replace. Just use a pick tool to pull it out, then use a short piece of PVC pipe to pound the new one in place.

If I'm looking at it correctly, the seat for the seal is behind it, so removing the final drive would be pointless except for removing the seal.

I forgot I have to replace my seals as well at some point. Buy mine and I'll make you a how to video ;)

Good luck. You should do fine.

i'd not use brakekleen, but would rather use mineral spirits to get the heavy off, then soak them good with that paint thinner and allow them to drip dry a bit.. then perhaps 'bake' them in yer bbq grill a tad..

that's if they are expensive and you are tight on funds.

i've done brakes on old fords and salvaged them to save a buck when needed.. or bought new if I had the funds..e tc.

your call..

Drywall screw from here take one of those intentions tap the screw a little and screw it.

Oreilleys has universal tractor fluid for reasonable price its is same thing as hygard light or 303.

I can tell by the design the shaft will still leak out at the end inside the drum if there is not a gasket or sealer or its loose fwtw.
