Oil in Brakes - Anyone change an axel seal?

The way seal looks from that side .I'm going to guess that the seal will be knocked in from the inside.

The engineers did every thing else so good on these i would hope they would of designed it so that it will come out from the outside as this is a part that will need to be replaced at some point.

Start trying to tear it out, if it comes out fine if not its not good anyway and you have to get it out some way.

just looked at my service manual. You can replace it from the outside

1 - is drain tranmission ( we know that)

2 -remove oil seal using chisel

3 -remove seal collar & O ring

4 replace

on installation... It states to use grease on the O ring & seal b-4 installation

Scotty,

Kenmac just explained what I was telling you about the inner race sealing on the seal and the shaft may leak down the splines etc-the inner race is possibly a collar instead of the bearing race with an o-ring so that will be all the sealing it should need a seal and an o-ring.

I would refrain from using the chisel though. ;)

Well....I called a JD dealer who said there is an inner seal and an outer seal...so Weavers has sent me the wrong part. I will have to reorder...:mad:

I removed the whole darn thing....heavy but now its off.....Everything came apart pretty nicely and I can see why the seal failed. there has been water in here for a while and the pinion gear has raise rust near the seal. Do I try to remove this rust? Maybe with a polishing wheel?
Also - do I need to get a new paper gasket or can I just seal this with the blue stuff? Stinks that I have to do this to the otehr side too! And I haven't even started this tractor yet...I have no idea how it runs!!!

That looks like a bearing. (Final drive gear bearing ....that's according to my book) It also talks about the retainer plate that has to be removed to access the bearing....I used black high temp silicone to seal mine. I only had a leak there ( at the housing). I guess blue would work

i'd bite the bullet for a new gasket.. especially if it's involving any preload.

I don't think a surfacing wheel will clean that up to mae a seal happy. replace or sleeve would be my vote..

Where the case bolts back to the tractor ??. It's like a paper thin gasket tthat goes there.. Maybe I'm misunderstanding which gasket he's talking about

i dont think that rust will come off easy either. If it were me i would use gasket maker, if your not already ordering stuff. Most stuff even big equiptment uses silicone now.

I am speaking of using gasket maker in lieu of the paper thin gaskets. The thing about that rust - its on the brake side (dry side) So I am surprised it would cause any trouble after reinstallation. I assume the water worked its way through the seal or froze and did the same?
