Thank God that this thread has devolved from a technical discussion on the merits of the Ford Focus to a never ending pissing contest as liberals become enraged by the heresy of conservatives that choose not to accept the religion of the left over reason.

Yeah, I think IT is just so tired of the beating he's been getting in this thread that he's trying to inflame it to the point it gets locked just so he can save face.

I'm not playing his jr high school game.

A politician would lie or twist the truth? I'm shocked and disappointed. Guess it's time to switch my allegiance to Newt who promises overnight $2.50/gal gas.

Thanks for the data. Guess it is time to come up to speed on some of this.

As I said though, it's both parties that lie about gas leases and unused leases.

1st a company bids for the rights to explore and area. Then they have to get extraction permits. In many cases the permits are held up by the government or denied. In the case of BP they were forced from what I had read out into deeper water.

The Destin Dome is an example of Bush playing this BS game. He shut down a huge natural gas field off Floridas west coast for political reasons. I think we actually had to buy back the leases from shell (?) due to this.

This was all I was able to find quickly on this (links below), it was about 10 years ago. There is already undersea gas lines in the area, so it made all kinds of sence to use this resource. Yet it was stopped for purely political reasons.

The Spokesman-Review.com - Bush prevents oil, gas drilling off Florida coast

The unexpected announcement would require the federal government to repurchase $235 million worth of oil and gas leasing rights in the Destin Dome area, about 25 miles south of Pensacola, and in three wildlife areas including Big Cypress National Preserve.

Jeb Bush acknowledged that the Oval Office announcement would boost his re-election campaign in Florida, the swing state in the 2000 presidential election and a tourism mecca where polls show 75 percent oppose offshore drilling.

If it was false you would have found something by now to show it and you'd be crowing about it.

I can't help you if you won't help yourself. But that is the leftwing way, isn't it? Always wanting someone else to do your work for you?

I cannot find any data at all related to your claim. Neither can you apparently or your dittohead gene would be working overtime to propagate the news.

In God we trust. All other must show data.

Learn to use google.

Look two_bit, the information is not available on the internet unless it is purchase which I am not going to do. I have made several attempts to find it.

You introduced the report in to the discussion by publishing the headline claim that the break even point of a Volt is when a gallon of gas is $12.50.

All the forum wants to know is what criteria did the report use to come up with that number, for example, how many years is the cost of the car advertised, how many miles driven per year, per trip, miles driven on electric versus gas.

Because you published the headlines, it is safe to assume you have this data and looked it over before sharing it. I do not think you did, I think you stumbled on the report headline and recklessly posted it.

If you do have the data then please share it or tell us the truth. Responding to the fourm with insults is ridiculous when trying to cover your lack of due diligence.

Europe took the lead and imposed USLD in 2005. USA followed in 2007. The EU ULSD has maximum 10 ppm while US ULSD has 15 ppm sulfur content. The issue is how the pollution is measured. In EU it is pollution per km driven while in the US it is a percentage of pollutants in the exhaust. The result is that EU cars might have less clean exhaust but they still pollute less per km driven than larger cars with cleaner exhaust. The EU system favors small very efficient cars and punishes larger cars. The US system treats all sizes the same.

Thanks...that clears up some of my incredulity. I had a difficult time believing that the Europeans had a meaningfully lower standard for cleanliness. And even if it were true, how much different could it really be.

Often, companies like Ford and GM have nice vehicles I would love to have...just elsewhere. VW could sell me a diesel Caddy tomorrow, and I hate to buy new. I'd LOVE to be on a team to help design the US diesel Caddy and the Diesel Caddy hybrid for the US consumer. I have so many (self-serving) ideas for that platform.

Thank to US manufacturers lobby. They didn't want system that would punish large vehicles (engines).

You are correct about one thing at least. The disparagement of forum members because of differentiated opinions is unproductive at best. I think everyone here is above belittlement whether given or received. The aspect of the discussion goes south otherwise. Proof of a position is not an unreasonable request. Nor should the request be made with even the slightest of provocation. I think in this case all one has to factor in is the initial cost of such a vehicle, its cost to run, its 5 year upkeep costs and then compare these figures in the same way to a car getting 35 mpg. Biggest gripe I have with the Volt is that it is a vehicle before its time which leads me to believe it's sole purpose of existence goes beyond fuel savings. More to do with CAFE averages for GM along with governmental subsidies to both GM and consumers and who knows what else. Its like the wind power company that wants to put in turbines just off the RI shore. Where it now costs us .14 cents per kwh, it will end up costing .25-.27 per kwh with the turbines. No logic there unless of course one factors in any kick backs to politicians from this company for giving it the green light. If a land based turbine has a 25 year life expectancy, it takes 50 years to pay ROI to break even. I think the Volt, as currently configured, is trespassing on about the same situation. Not in years of course as the above example but definitely in concept.
