Is the base prep worth doing myself?

I can get a subcontractor to take away old asphalt for $600

Rent a b26 for a weekend $280/8hrs on the clock

Rent a 3 ton roller with delivery for $225/8hrs

So my plan was to have asphalt stripped $600
B26 remove base and pile in yard. $280
Roll replace base. $225
8-10" of base material $1000

Total around $1100 plus my time

Just need to get paved after. Think it's worth the hassle ?

I would say no, the main reason being that what if something goes wrong. The paving contractor isn't going to take responsibility because the base is integral to a good job. You may have trouble getting them to agree to just lay the pavement and if they do they're not going to warranty it or fix it if there's an issue (like slope or crown, cracks from settling etc).

I am not sure that a B26 will do the job, I have a B21. A skid steer might be a better choice. For one thing I don't think the B26 will dump into a full size dump truck very well.

It is worth mentioning that tearing up asphalt takes a pretty good sized machine to do it efficiently. It can be done with a smaller machine, but you may find that it takes a LOT longer. To give an idea it took about 16 hours (2 days) for the contractor who did mine to tear out and clean up just my parking area (100 x 30) and they used a huge excavator to do the work. I haven't done similar work with my tractor, but imagine it would take a long time and maybe another piece of equipment to break up the pavement so it can be loaded.

I will be dumping existing base crushed stone onto lawn with b26

Box blade on b2920 to loosen soil if needed

As for the paving co. Not wanting to warranty work... Good luck if somebody paid cash having the contractor honor the job

A skid steer is the way to go with that, I have a Cat 246 and a L3700. Given the option of either machine, I would not even consider the Bota. A skid steer will also move,level,and compact recycled or processed gravel in a fraction of the time as the other options you have thought of. I would say you should easily be able to rip up the old, pile it for removal, spread and level 5-6" of processed for your base and still have plenty of time to return the rented SS before 4pm. I would also suggest renting a set of forks, this will allow you to slide them under the drive and break it out really,really fast.

Sorry I misunderstood and I guess I still do. Why do you remove existing base gravel to put more down? I would think if the base is not adequate you would add to the existing, level and roll firm. After all the existing has to be well compacted already.

Well you see as I have previously stated the drive has been dug in the same area twice over the last 15 yrs.

Sewer pipe lateral done (before I bought) in 2000 and water line in 2008 by myself.

The drive was a double to single to double (dog bone pattern) when I bought the house and converted to a double drive in 2003.

I am not worried about the part that I did since I dug 18" used 4" minus as a base and 5/8 minus on top...hasn't moved.

It's the front area that has been excavated a few times. Most paving companies do not want to warranty this cut unless its been sitting/settling for 7yrs plus
