We live in a semi-rural area with a neighbor (a cop) 200 feet away from us next door, and he is a great guy and is always eyeballing anybody who pulls into our driveway that he doesn't recognize....

Since I am retired, and usually home when my wife is here, I don't think she will ever have to worry about the situation OP presented us with and that is a good thing, as she hates guns of all kinds. What I detest is the (censored) solictors who pull into our driveway trying to sell us something, the majority of them seem to be blind to the large "NO SOLICTING" sign I have posted by the roadfront...especially the Jehovah's Witnesses.

About a year ago some dimwit with a jacked up 4X4 with tradesman signs on the doors came roaring into our driveway, barely missing one of our cats. I grabbed a ball bat from the garage and began running toward him, screaming "GET THE F*** OUT OF HERE" and he reversed out so fast he almost went into the ditch across the road...maybe next time he will notice it when a sign is posted "NO SOLICTING"....

Fortunately we are remote enough that we don't get that. Even invited people have been afraid to come up our driveway.... Maybe it"s a local thing. Or maybe it's the banjo music we have playing down at the road...:D

As for the Jehovah Witnesses, I've thought about meeting them at the door nude or something. That might cure that problem!

I'm not buying their wares, but neither am I offended by the Jehovah's Witnesses or Mormons. After all, they certainly pose no threat to society like the addicts. If they pick up some stray souls and take them to Church, that's better than taking them to the honky tonk or a crack house.

I had an outboard motor stolen a few years ago, and the local sheriff would only take a report over the phone. I call a couple of months later, and told the dispatch that I was going to shoot the neighbors goats that she would not keep fenced up, and were gridiling my fruit trees. They were out in less than five minutes. And the Cop shot one of them as it charged him. Response time if you have some kind of arms seems to be faster.

Actually it wasn't very smart approaching the vehicle, or person. She should have just stayed in the house dialed 911 and waited inside with the gun pointed at the door.

If this was a real bad guy he could have had a gun in his lap and when he slid out he could have gotten the drop on your wife.

Furthermore your wife at the time of approaching the vehicle was unaware if there was or was not one or two accomplices hiding out of site. Too many variables and unknowns approaching a vehicle even if it is on your property.

Sure everything turned out, but she only had a 50/50 chance of winning that confrontation. Less if he had a gun and the drop on here.

Being behind the door with the police on the way is the safest bet. If he tried to come in the locked front door, clearly your wife knew his intension and all bets are off at that point.

So high five all around, but next time tell your wife to use some common sense.

I disagree, The police are few and far between in my area and we live so far back in the sticks you an time their response with a sun dial.
Wifey wanted there to be as many barriers as possible between him and the kids. Her being one, the dogs ( and were not talking poodles ) being the second, then the locked doors. By this time my kids woud have been half way down the mountain.

If there was a confrontation, she wanted it to be outside so the kids could take off running.
I think THAT was using common sense, if they all huddled in the house and she lost that fight then, my kids also lose the fight because they have no "escape route".

If it was dark out, all would have been different. Then it is hunker down and defend the room she is in.

For several years, we had an electric gate where my son lives, so only those with openers could access that house/property via vehicle. He now has a business there so we unhooked the controller.

I believe they make battery powered electric gates; just a thought.

This has been an interesting thread and probably a good reminder for all of us to look at our own situations to see if there is anything we need to change. I know since I retired I spend much less time on the range than I should and sometimes don't even have a gun on me. I can't run, so I have to skip a lot of steps on the Continuum of Force and breaking contact is not an option. I need to have my wife shoot more and become more situation aware without developing a siege mentality.

Your response is out of line. Yes, you brought up some valid points, but the OP's wife did use good common sense and you need to apologize for your last comment.

There is no one simple answer to all situations. But when police response can be hours, if ever, hiding inside with kids can be the wrong answer. Most thieves like this are looking for easy pickings and they found out that this was not what they were looking for.

The more law-abiding people that have guns, the better off we are," Hamilton County (Cincinnati) Prosecutor Joe Deters said. "Because the bad guys always have guns, You look at these school shootings or church shootings, the ones that have been stopped, it was because someone there had a gun."

Many people that argue the hide or run response have been told that by the police their entire life's. Criminals know that and use it. The criminal in a rural setting wanting to steal property is counting on that type of action. Standing your ground they retreat if they can. If on the other hand the purpose was to do bodily harm they would not have driven up in plain sight, even a criminal does not want a fire fight, better an ambush.
Wife did the correct thing and I salute her

Agree 100% she was right to be bold and confront him, given the situation.
