Price Check LA5450 with L1150A FEL

Thanks. The dealer got back with me today and that is the same base price that Kubota wants for the owner/operators manual. The Service Manual is $136 and I think I saw a post that said the Service Manual has the Owner/operators manual included. I've seen lower prices online, but I've been burnt before and think I will stick with the manufacturer this go round.

Hey Rick - congrats on finding a L5450. Is the cab a Laurin or is it Jo-Dale Perry? The BF1100 was found on Canadian machines I think. Does this L5450 have the hydraulic Shuttle? Two-speed or single speed pto? R1 rubber or R4? Pretty sure all L5450's have live independent pto (clutch lever beside the seat).

The hard cab is a dealer-installed item - the loader usually becomes non-removable unless the valve mounting is altered. (modified mine so the valve stays with the cab when the loader is off).

Let me know what questions come up - maybe I've been there. Dick B
Dick,

The cab is a Jo-Dale Perry and it has the hydraulic shuttle. I think it is a single speed pto, but there is a lever with no label that may be a two speed. Don't know the difference between R1, R2, or R4 rubber. Guess I have to do some research there. Got it out today with the mower and I really like the power. Got in a bog and just stopped, put it in 4wd and backed right out.

I do have a weird problem with the starting. The key start works some times and sometimes not. The dealer is trying to tell me that it may be the after marked starter, but if I hard power the solenoid the starter works just fine. I'm wondering if it is the sensor for the neutral/clutch position that is the issue?

Sorry, not sure what happened there, but welcome to the L5450 club. About your problem with the starter. Not sure if I heard you right and whether you are getting any power at all. I had a problem where it was completely dead or so it seemed. It turned out to be 1 of the safety switches. The 2 that I know of are: 1 at the PTO lever and if I remember correctly the second was just under the clutch pedal, which was my problem. It had just come loose from hitting something. If the PTO lever is in the wrong position it won't start either. Maybe I am off track, but just thought I would throw in my 2 cents.

In addition to Gray Ghost's suggestions, there's another item that sometimes interferes with starting too - it's the "fusible link" - it's a white plug located near the starter with a short loop of red wire connecting the two terminals. It corrodes and won't carry the current. In a pinch any heavy wire will work temporarily. It acts to protect against connecting a battery or cables backward, so a new one is a good idea eventually. All Kubotas have some kind of fuse in the starting circuit. Starters are sometimes replaced that really just needed a less-corroded fuse (or other wiring connection).

R1 tires are Ag rib, R4 are industrials, R3 turfs. The lever next the 4wd lever is pto engaged/neutral. On some early L5450's sold outside US there was a 2-speed gearbox (related story here) Take care, Dick B

My L4350 is the baby of that class and there are 2 safeties as stated by GrayGhost. PTO lever to the left of the seat and the clutch pedal. When I bought mine the dealer informed me that after starting, the PTO lever should be engaged (put back down), something to do with lubricating oil being stopped when up. Never investigated completely, only took his word for it. No problems to date.

Good advice. When the PTO clutch lever is up it's the same as pressing down a clutch pedal. The release bearing and the crank thrust bearings are under constant load from the PTO clutch springs. There are reports of bearing failure from running a long time like this. It's good practice to put the lever down after starting, using the PTO lever to select drive or neutral.

I had not heard that before about not leaving the pto lever up but it makes sense. So raise the pto lever left of the seat when starting and lower it immediately after starting as long as the pto engage lever down by your left foot is off.. Sounds like good advise. I am always hitting my hand on it anyway when it is up.

I had one time when my L5450 would not start but quickly found where the positive cable on the starter needed to be snugged up and cleaned. It was drawing current, but not enough to turn the start over. Simple fix.

Turns out that my problem is probably the ignition switch since it works some times, but not all. Looks like a previous owner has disabled both of the safety switches and the ends of the wires are just hanging there. :) I will take the ignition switch off and clean it up as much as I can, but it will probably need to be replaced.
