This hydraulic angle kit looks to be fairly easy to duplicate for less than the $461.00:eek: that York wants. The cylinder appears to be a "Chief" so that's commonly carried through TSC and other outlets, hoses and tips are no problem either. My York RI 8' rake is exact to this sales photo with the exception that mine has the standard mechanical adjustment bar but the mounting tabs are the same but York Modern offers up no cylinder specs as far as I know. The rake's two attachment plates are of different thicknesses so the cylinder's base clevis fork needs to have a 1" opening and the rod clevis fork needs to have a 3/4" opening or both just at 1" as in the photo there looks to be some play in the rod's clevis fork.
Right now I hope someone has this kit and can help me with the cylinder size and stroke or I can attach it up and try calcing the rake's swing angles. Any thoughts on how to correctly do that and match it to a cylinder? What diameter cylinder would work the best? My tractor has 1/2" remotes, what would be the minimum size hose I could use?

A 2.5 in or 3.0 in cyl and 1 in rod should work.

Measure the distance with the rake pulled into the cyl. That will give you closed cyl pin to pin length.

Turn the rake so the cyl is fully extended. This will give you the open cyl pin to pin.

With the rake straight, the cyl should be at 1/2 stroke.

You would then look for a cyl with a retracted length of pin to pin.

The stroke should give you the ability to close the cyl and provide you a certain angle for the rake. Fully extended, will give you the same angle the other way.

You could use 1/4 in hose to slow the cyl speed if desired, or a needle valve.

If you want to be able to adjust the rake while it is under a load, I would go with either a 3 1/2" or 4" dia cylinder. Most implement manufacturers use either 3/8" or 1/2" hose.

I personally would not use any hydraulic in this situation that did not have at least a 1 1/2" dia rod. I've seen to many smaller dia rods bent for whatever reason. If I were to guess, I would say that the cylinder has a 6" or 8" stroke, but pictures can be deceiving.

Just my :2cents:

I agree at least a 3 1/2" or 4" bore cylinder. I would want 1 3/4" to 2" rod diameter. my guess would be 12" to 16" stroke.
Measure the black part on your rake. pin to pin collapsed and extended. Difference will give you the stroke you need. Cylinders normally list a collapsed pin to pin measurement. You can get 16" cylinders in 26 1/4" and 31 1/2"
You may not find an exact match, but something close.
Pins could be either 1" or 1 1/4"

14"-16" stroke would be the standard stroke on a rear blade, but this is a very short set up. I hope that the OP gets back to us just so that we will know. ;)

The two attaching holes on the mechanical adjusting arm are 1" in diameter.
All other measurements listed are center of hole to center of hole.
The stationary distance between the two York rake mechanical/hydraulic mounting plates is 24".

Here are the adjustable measurements:

PHOTO #1 Rake is parallel to the tractor's 3-PT hitch, standard working position.
A to B 9"
A to C 24-1/4"
B to C 15"

PHOTO #2 Rake is full swing angle right. (fully open)
A to B 13"
A to C 28-1/4"
B to C 15"

PHOTO #3 Rake is full swing angle left. (fully closed)
A to B 5"
A to C 20-1/4"
B to C 15"

Looks like you will need a 20" cylinder with a 8" stroke or possibly a 18" cylinder with a 12" stroke if you want to add a little more swing.

An 8" stroke Prince tie-rod cylinder will fit perfectly. 20 1/4"-28 1/4".

I personally would use a Maxim 3 1/2" dia welded cylinder with a 1 3/4" dia rod. Clean and plenty strong. Bailey part # 288-441

Thanks to all for your guidance.
Can you explain the difference between a welded cylinder and a tie-rod cylinder and why select one over the other?

A tie rod cylinder uses 4 long bolts to hold the ends on the cylinder, very common with AG implements. A welded cylinder has one end welded on and the rod end of the cylinder is threaded into or onto the actual cylinder. Welded cylinder is just cleaner looking and has less stuff to catch stuff IMO. Nothing wrong with either type, I just prefer the welded type. ;)
