My insurance company has no problems with a pellet stove. as long as it is up to code. Did not bump the rates up.

Put in a St Croix revolution pellet furnace this year and So far it is way better than the propane furnace it replaced. in thermostat mode it runs constantly blowing heat into the house constantly keeping the kids room warm for once. Cost to heat the house this year was around $740 dollars as my propane bill last year was twice that. I also have a Lopi pellet stove to heat the other side of the house. and have had no issues with that as well. I cut 8-10 cords a year for my fire pit and camping, but if I had to do it to heat the house, it would become work and I get enough of that at work.

8-10 cords for firepit and camping!!! In your area of the world, that's a 2000 dollar fuel load. Holy smokes. I burn less than half of that per year to heat my home.

My fire pit is 5'x4' I can load a half chord in there at one time and have done so on many occasions, Though I don't burn thru everything in a year. I do have a lot of trees. If I had to do it to heat the house it would take all the fun out of burning.

I heat 100% with wood. My house is about 1600 sq ft, and about 2400 with the upstairs that we do not use, but I live in ice cold New Hampshire and on the coldest nights in the winter with the wind wipping, my house still stays about 80 degrees throughout. That is only with the blower fan on the back of the stove. We bought a US stove model#2000 last year from Tractor Supply, and I only paid $450.00 on sale with the blower. It is an EPA stove, so it re-burns the gasses in it. They also give you a tax credit for buying this type of a stove. I went from burning about 6-7 cords a winter to 3 cords. It is messier, and not as convient as a pellet stove, but it is great heat, and we never have any smoke, or smell of smoke in the house. I split my own wood, and I have heated 100% free the past 4 years. The only splitter I have is a $300 electric 5 ton Homelite splitter, and I am able to split 24in oak no problem. I am going to invest in a 3 point splitter this year, but that one has worked great. If you can splitt the wood, and don't mind burning it, it would or "wood" save you a ton of money depending on what you have for forest in your area.

what insurance company do you have? maybe i'm looking in all the wrong places. i can't see anything wrong with my existing, and looking at mine it is a lot more safe than a fireplace and even an electric heat. There should not be any problem with insurance if they understood the advantages of the shutdown systems if a problem would occur.

Can't recall what ins company I am with now, would have to go in the house to look up the paperwork, but the "primary heat" heat in the house is elect, and they always ask it we have a wood stove. The answer to that question is no. Even had a ins inspection a couple of years ago, and nothing was said, with the pellet stove.
