Nice fix! does it help speed up the flow any? I've been looking for some 'black market' spouts that work better and am toying with the idea of just drilling a small hole and then covering it with grey tape when its in storage.

My method uses a long 1/8" aluminum rivet to hold the spout compressed open and even with the plastic tip cut off, it does not seem to flow any better. The downside of my fix is that with the tip cut off, the spout WILL NOT seal as well and is dependent upon the red "child safety cap" for a seal. Since the only time my cans are transported full is five miles from the filling station, I don't worry about the imperfect seal.

Today I went to fill a pair of those newfangled "safety spout" fuel cans with diesel. Although they are labeled as holding five gallons, you can only get a shade over 4 1/2 gallons in each one before the fluid will overflow out the filler hole. My older Chilton type cans that are labeled as five gallons will easily hold that much....been a long time since I have purchased a fuel can...what with all the downsized packaging for everything else we buy (like the 1.75 quart container of ice cream) I should have known better....

Next time your at the super market take a look at the ice cream. They now are 1.5 quarts.

The valve stems are not affected by the diesel or gas so far, and the cans empty real well. Best cheap fix I have found..........

Here is a picture of my cans. Not all of them, just the ones handy at the time. 2 In center of back row are used all the time, along with 1 other just like them. Can on the right leaks and needs the bottom fixed. 1 On the left has been "Resting" for a long time.

2 In the front are what I call button cans. Short 1, its brother and 1 a little shorter get used fairly often. Other can needs lid and spout as well as cleaned out.

Back row are used for Diesel and button for gasoline. Only put about 3 or 4 gallons in the diesel cans. And always leave some space in the gas cans.

Now who said I didn't have a Can. :D

WHAT TYPE OF GALLON ARE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT?

1 Imperial gallon = 1.20 US gallons

if you buy a can made in Europe, Canada, Central America, South America, Asia (almost every country in the world other than USA) and it reads gallons then check to see if it is Imperial gallons.

US gallons are 20% larger than imperial gallons.
World wide the defintiion of a gallon in over 90% of the world is imperial. best guess if can is made anywhere in the world other than USA and says gallons then probably they mean Imperial gallons

Cheers all

2 quarts=a half gallons, so I guess that we are on track with the rest of the world now, except for gas. We still get a much better deal in the US, than in Europe. Now the middle east, that is a different story..Its about $8.61 a gallon of gas in the UK right now. Pretty expensive....

I noticed this last week. Other brands have switched as well around here.

I grew up right down the road from the Friendly's Ice Cream Factory. Lots of good field trips as a kid. Don't you live near Ben and Jerry's?
