Five gallon can, huh?

i have 2 of those cans. i can get over 5 gallons in them. You have to waight until all the fizz goes down or you wont get 5 gallons in them. It takes a little bit of time and patience. You have to adjust fuel flow so it trickles out of the nozzle and you will get over 5 gallons in them.

Sorta makes you think if the pumps are calibrated correct doesn`t it? The containers I use, are labeled 5 gallons, but will hold almost 7 gallons according to the pump. I am temped to fill one with a gallon jug and see how many it will hold.

You may be onto something there, these two new cans are shaped narrower and more upright unlike the older Chilton type that are like a square box...yet I am not sure if they will flex enough to hold another half gallon. You basically COULD get another half gallon IF you tipped it upright onto the rear corner and filled them, but the fuel would leak out once you set them flat. Hmmm...going to run out and take a picture now...BRB...the older red Chilton type holds a full five gallons while the new yellow can has an indicator line (marked black in the picture) that says "safe fill level" and it has 4.5 gallons in it at that mark. Yes it WILL hold 5 gallons of AIR.

In this part of the world plastic cans don't last long. Sun eats them in a year or 2. I have a fair collection of metal cans. Not the little tin ones. Think I've bot 4 of the old style Lever open cap type a couple of 3 gallon round button style and 1 smaller (1 gallon??),

On the lever open I rarely put in over 4 gallons. Have never had a new 1, but bet it would leak sloshing around on my road.

If you have an Army Surplus store close, some of them have the Real Cans. Had a bunch of them at one time. All gone now. They may also have the metal button style can.

I noticed you have one of those EPA compliant gas cans that takes forever to empty and you spill more than the old cans that had a vent. I bought a bunch of these at NAPA and drilled a hole on the opposite end from the spout, then used a string to work a tubeless tire valve up into the hole from the inside and hooked on a puller and pulled it in. Then you take out guts and you have a cheap ($1.00) vent that works fantastic, doesn't leak, and you can find a new cap real easy when you lose or misplace it. Try it, you'll like it...............

I got three new 5 gln deisel containers last year and now that the sides are bowed out they hold 5 at the safe fill line same as yours. Set it out in the sun tomorrow now that it is full and check your fill line (black pen) after the plastic softens.

It looks like if you could fill it to the top with the handle full, it may hold 5 gallons, but because of the shape, you may have to fill it with the handle vertical to fit 5 gallons in, but that dosen't leave any room for expansion. I know that when I was in the Air Force, when they would fill the jets in the morning when the fuel was colder, it would warm up later in the day, and leak out all over the tarmac. That may be the case. Not sure. I use Scepter military cans that hold 5 galons, and you can drop them out of the back of your truck, and they will not leak a drop. They are expensive unless you can find them used. Scepter makes a pretty good can on the civilian market. They are made by our neighbors in the north. They must be made from old hockey pucks, because they are very thick. It seams to be much thicker plastic, and I have actually found them at Walmart. I have one that holds gas on one side, and bar oil on the other for my chain saws. Anyways, I really hate the new caps also. That why I have stuck with the military cans, you can fill a tank very quickly. They sell the civilian equivalent on Amazon for $23. Well worth the investment. I had to get a yellow cap strap, and label them, so my wife wouldn't use the diesel in the atv since both of the cans are green. This might seem funny, but I watched someone fill a HMMWV "humvee" in the military with regular gasoline, even though it said Diesel below the fuel cap. It reeked havoc, and was towed from the pumps.

I also found metal jerry cans that are 5 1/4 gallon at sportsmans guide. They do not have the new type fuel cap, just a funnel type, so this would be a very good deal for $26.

Today I went to fill a pair of those newfangled "safety spout" fuel cans with diesel. Although they are labeled as holding five gallons, you can only get a shade over 4 1/2 gallons in each one before the fluid will overflow out the filler hole. My older Chilton type cans that are labeled as five gallons will easily hold that much....been a long time since I have purchased a fuel can...what with all the downsized packaging for everything else we buy (like the 1.75 quart container of ice cream) I should have known better....:laughing:

Don't let them fool you. The cans are getting smaller. I bought 4 cans over the last two years and they only hold 4.5 gallons now. The first few times I filled them I was also filling vehicle tanks at the same time and didnt notice. When I made a special trip it was plain. I felt much better about my fuel economy after that. I thought I had run through 100 gallons when I had actually only burned 90 gallons.
