Tractor Definition

Don't beat me up cause I don't even have a tractor yet:laughing: I say if you can put it in neutral and push it by yourself on grass, hill or uneven ground its a lawnmower.
Not to beat you up, but I put my 1700 Ford in neutral and push it, especially during maintenance or 3PH implement change-out. As I read your definition it is a lawn tractor, but I think most people would call it a cut.

3pt with PTO would be a start for diffrence between tractor and lawnmower.

but really its just a name. Im one of the guilty ones of calling the BX owners (Kubota's SCUT) beefed up lawn mowers.

If you take a lawnmower and put a PTO on it does it make it a tractor?.

How about construction?

no "frame"... castiron engine bolted to a cast iron gear box/rear end, speak in terms of "splitting" the halves.... = tractor

Stamped sheetmetal "frame" = lawnmower

This means you've effectively split the class by size/weight/capability and also why one manufactures SCUT may be considered a tractor (due to construction type) vs another manufactures which did just what i mentioned above, bolt a PTO on the rear of a "lawn mower"

btw for everyone that thinks any "lawnmower" that doesnt have a PTO should be called a tractor, then yes you have to include ZTR's in that group also because at that point a ZTR can do everything a "riding lawn mower" can. And at that point, you've slid so far down the slope that i really cant take your definition seriously anymore :-D

oh and to muddy the waters more, Im a big fan of early Gravely walk behind TRACTORS. L series etc. Later gravely created a 4 wheel riding version that used the same gear driven body as some of the older walk behinds. You could also get a front mounted PTO to hang your old L series impliments off of. So what do you call that? With out the PTO its shure looks and smells like a lawnmower, but with a front mount pto, your back in the tractor realm...

In short, no easy answers.

Sorry, not trying to hijack this thread, but it is a police tractor, they used it in the UK for by a police force to highlight their fight against agricultural crime. The say that they can use it in a natural disaster. I could see that. Very interesting tractor. It's a John Deere. They car it a "Crop" car.

Lol, as embarrassing as it may be, I had to ride a police bike for a few years and try stopping a car on that. They actually give you lights and a siren. I was always to embarrassed to try. Not as bad as some cities that make you ride a segway as a cop. But, hey, how many jobs do you get to ride a mountain bike at work, and get paid. And, no I didn't eat donuts while on the bike....I put them in my camel back, lol..

Not as embarrassing as this, it should be illegal to paint a tractor certain colors. I don't think this one was for a cause either;

I'd say any machine that cuts grass and can't do anything else is a lawn mower. I never saw a ZTR with a snow plow or a tiller, the same goes for those gang mowers at golf courses. Lawn mowers cut grass and can't do anything else without serious modifications.

Yeah, I saw a purple JD Model A with yellow wheels a few years ago. I just thought of it as a Viking JD.

Although I think the lavender and rose colors on the Case clash...

ah you beat me to it. i was waiting for someone to post the comment about a ztr does nothing but cut grass to which i was going to post similar pics of various ztrs that can be adapted with other front implements.

per the dictionary version of a tractor (that someone posted) wouldn't that make ATV's, golf carts, UTV's that pull various pull behind equipment tractors also?

pull behind tiller, DR tiller check
pull behind brush hog... DR brush mower check
pull behind disc, check
pull behind driveway grader, check
pull behind backhoe, check
pull behind logtrailer, check

I'd agree with these statements to the fullest. Though my old 3120 would feel like a monster to most people, to me it felt tiny, especially when I'd park it next to the 5410. So for me, a 3120 was a SCUT. Even my 110, which will do everything I need feels small. I started off looking at full sized TLB's (as shown on TBN) because I like that size and it feels like a tractor to me. Nobodies definition of two classes of a tractor are the same. That's why saying that the Max is deceptive can't be possible.
I think that's the part you may have missed.

No one said the Max wasn't a tractor, but several agreed that it is not a "subgompact tractor"............The max is more aptly described as a "compact tractor". That's where the 'deceptive' kicks in.

We aren't going to go through all this again. But my point is you still have not given a clear forefront definition of the classes of tractors that can be agreed on by everyone. Since there isn't one - it can't be wrong. This is what's been evading you, Don's tractor classification doesn't work for me and a lot of other people.

My 2001 Jeep TJ Wrangler pulls a 2 bottom trip plow, a set of 6' wide double disks and 6' cultivators. I guess it is a tractor, too.

What makes a tractor a tractor and a glorified lawn mower a tractor?
A glorified lawn mower must have a cab, but it still wont be a tractor. ;)

The specifications spell it all out clearly for most people to understand, I'm sorry that you don't.
