Hello all, just an FYI. In the operators manual the 50hr service in reference to the transmission, tells you to change the transmission filter and clean the strainer. The manual doesn't call for a fluid change until you hit the 400hr mark. You can change the transmission filter with minimal fluid loss. However when you pull the strainer out to clean it you will lose most of your fluid. You lose enough that at this point you might as well pull the drain plug and drain out the rest of the fluid. The manual is a little misleading. It seems as though you can clean the strainer without much fluid loss but you can't. Hey its probably not a bad idea to change the fluid anyway at this point.

For the 50 hr service I changed the fluid on my BX1860, and if I had to do it all over again I wouldn't. The fluid that came out looked just like the new stuff that went in. If you don't change it, you need a cork or rubber plug that will fit in where the strainer comes out, then you'll lose a pint or less.

I changed the hydro fluid and filter on my BX2360 at the end of the first year even though it only had 47 hours. In hindsight it was probably not needed as the fluid that came out looked just like new.I don't think there was enough break in time to cause any residue to accumulate and be flushed out with the fluid. It didn't hurt to change it but wasn't needed.I will probably wait at least two more seasons before changing it again.

Actually, if you use a tapered rubber plug, or over-sized wine bottle cork, trimmed into a taper with a utility knife, you won't lose hardly a pint. I didn't on my BX. Leave the filler plug in place as it blocks make up air.

Lots of folks also use the shop vac on the filler hole to "hold" the fluid too.

You don't "have" to lose tons of fluid. Not at all.

Yes the tapered plug is a good idea to have
handy when you clean the strainer. This was a learning
experience for me for the future. Thanks for all the posts.

I bought an extra strainer. pulled out strainer and quuickly put the other one with little fulid loss. works for me.

Use a vacuum on the dipstick hole and lose NONE:)

At 50 HR on my BX25 oil was beloe the dipstick. As I was going to change to the NAPA equivalant I decided not to mix so pulled the strainer and drained. Glad I did. The strainer had about a teaspoon of black gritty gunk and shiny metal specks in it. Fluid was clear in the drain pan. Changed the filter also for insurance. Cut the filter open and found some of the same black gunk. Repeated the process at 200 HR on strainer and filter. Both were clean so must have got it all the first time. You never know what new machinery will have in it from the factory.

In my younger day I did industrial refrigeration installation and service. The company had learned by bad experience about this stuff in compressors. We drained the oil, removed the hand holes, and cleaned the crankcase of all new compressors before start up. Amazing what we found. Even found a dead mouse in one, you figure.

Looks like a perfect example of the strainer and filter doing what they are supposed to do. Catch the junk and keep the fluid clean to keep on working to lubricate and operate. A great proof of no need to change the fluid before the recommended time in the Kubota owners manual. Change filters for sure because they do have a purpose.

I've been a supporter of the "just change the filters", as per the manual. In fact, at my first service on my BX, when I changed the fluid, it was crystal clear and I thought to myself, "what a waste, really".

However, some folks dump their fluid and see it to be dark, murky and such. I have no explanation as to why one tractor would have clear, clean fluid at 50 hours and another's fluid be all dark and murky and contaminated looking.

No explanation at all.

I've been having a touch of "chattering" when really hard pulling my dirt implements. I decided, mostly on a whim, to go ahead and drain the HST fluid last night on my B2320. It's only 3 gallons, so it won't rob my IRA or anything.

Dog gone it. It was putrid, dark and murky. I'm glad I dumped it.

So, long story short? You just never know what you got unless you draw some off for an inspection sample of sorts.
