How can you call an F450 a pickup? Isnt that more like a flatbed hauler or maybe configured for towing as in Wrecker.
Its getting at the far range of "pickup" with a one ton with dual wheel axles.

The F450 is out as a pickup and you can get it DRW or single. It is a beast as far as specs go and unless you park it right next to a 350 the average person wont see the difference. Their having some engine troubles though and I think the base price is over $50k.

My 2004 Isuzu NPR stakebed (8x14 ft Supreme bed) has 12,000 GVWR, 18,000 lb GCWR, weighs 7100 lb per the Petro truck scale (3/4 tank of gas, me and my usual truck tool kit). Has the 6L LQ4 GMC gas engine. 49,500 miles on the odometer when I bought it last year off eBay for $11K. That stakebed is a lot easier to load with pallets (seed, fertilizer, etc) than my old 2001 F150. And the wheel base and overlength of the NPR is about the same as that F150 short cab/long bed.

The F-450 pickup is only available as a diesel 4x4 crewcab dually. Only gear ratio is a 4.30 and combined with 400 hp and 800 ft/lb torque it definately is a master tow vehicle. Fuel mileage is decent, have gotten as high as 17 mpg non-towing interstate driving. It also has a wide-track front axle that gives a very short turning radius. No major engine problems that I'm aware of.

My 04 F-250 I just sold had 10,000# GVWR. It weighed 7,500# with me in it so it had a honest 2,500# payload.

My current 06 F-350 is SRW and has 11,500# GVWR. It weighs 7,600# with me in it and has a honest payload of 3,900#.

My 08 Nissan Titan has 7,200# GVWR. It weighs 5,860# with me in it so it has a honest 1,340#

All weights are with me in it, 3/4 tank of fuel, and my normal tools, straps, ect in the truck.

Looks like the only advantage the F450 has over the F350 is with a gooseneck otherwise same towing capacity and F350 has higher rear end ratio so maybe better gas mileage. I would think that the 4.30 rear end would cause you some serious engine RPM but sure ought to pull some load if you can keep diesel in it.

Maybe I didnt understand the tailgate height but the F150 looked to have a 4" span where as the 250-450 only 1" does that mean that is all it drops when loaded to the max. GOT to be rough riding, neck snapping, spine crunching etc.

Tires are larger diameter on 450, might even out some of the axle ratio difference.

I'm curious what the average GVWR is on a common go to town for nails ,work or ball game truck is now days .Based on my memory growing up if you have a utility trailer with a riding lawn mower on it you would be over weight based on the various trailering threads I see here .Seems to me they used to be rated at 5000-5500 and most weighed around 42-4700 lbs leaving 800 lbs cargo almost any milk cow weighed more than that or 4 butcher hogs.
Most modern half-tons should be able to carry 2,000+ lbs if ordered with correct factory options. 1-ton SRW payload should run close to 4,000 lbs and 3/4 tons maybe a little less.

What is killing payload and fuel economy is that compared to 15-20 years ago I am seeing a lot more 4x4's and crew/extra cabs on the road. Both of these cut down on fuel economy and reduce max payload and combination weights in those type models.

In my country/province your truck can have a capacity plate with 20k but the restriction will be on the class of license and sticker plate you purchased. You want to tow/carry more "legally" then pay more to the Ministry of Transport
