john deere 535 baler

Sorry, I do not know the torque requirement or what tool is used. Never did say you could not just install a bearing and go down the road just trying to explain why Deere does not offer the bearing individually to the dealers. You have obviously figured out that you can put the bearing into the housing relativly straight. Would probably only take a dealer one or two times of a customer not installing correctly, ruining a side sheet or have a small fire before the dealer just says we will just sell the assy only as far as a warranted part. It's not the 99% that can get it close enough its the 1% that can't figure it out and have a tendency to cry the loadest when things come appart. :)

Well my baler is a '05 model that I repair myself. IMHO that's what an laser thermometer is used for to detect hot brgs. If I had to pay $85 per hour every time something needed repaired I'd been out of the custom hay baling business a long time ago.

I did pose this brg/flange question on another tractor forum and a retied JD Ottumwa employee stated that the torque of brg installation was measured but he didn't know exactly how or what type tool was used.

Only $85/hour?? Last time I checked it was $97/hour at the local JD shop. No idea, what they'd charge to come out to the field!

Laser thermometer... I'm guessing that you check the baler every now and again while your in the field - what's a normal op temp? When do you start getting a bit "antsy"?

Lastly, where can a fellow get ahold of one of those?

Thanks.

Shop rates vary from one location to another. Last summer I had a pick up cam break on my 467 rd baler and had to straighten 2 tooth bars from hitting an obstruction that wasn't supposed to be in the hay field. It took 4 hrs to remove pickup and strip it down to access the bent parts and 6 hrs to reassemble. It would have cost me $850+ at the dealership in labor that I saved. On the laser thermometer I just look at the average temp of all brgs and if one is abnormally higher temp then I replace it.
A burning rd baler isn't a pretty site. BTDT 3 things I recommend for operating a rd baler are water fire extinguisher, comprehensive insurance and laser thermometer.

Ouch..! That must have been a fair sized obstruction! I've had a fair number of broken teeth; but bent tooth bars is a whole 'nother category..

There's a number of round baler folk's up here that have water extinguisher' mounted right up front.

Comp insurance and laser thermometer are darn good ideas, too!

Water fire extinguisher is a necessity but not the total answer when a fire starts. BTDT and it was exiting to say the least. It will get one's ole ticker moving.

At first read I thought Tx Jim was confusing laser with infrared but looking at this add.
Klein Tools IR2000 12:1 Dual Laser Infrared Thermometer | Klein Tools
I see that you can get a infrared thermometer that has a laser to show you the exact spot you are measuring.
I've used infrared thermometers to measure hot top pavement mats but have never needed to be precise about which point I was measuring. Learn something new here every day. :)

Thanks for checking my statement I strive to only state correct info but Oldtimers disease sometimes alters that fact. At my age confusion is a daily event.

Getting there myself. I can remember useless trivia I picked up in highschool but can't remember the name of a guy I just met yesterday or where I laid down the checkbook..
