I just walked through fields #1 & 2. They are over waist high in mostly Orchard Grass, which is odd, last year first cut was more Fescue. I ain't complaining though....got to get cutting.............

Waist high,my goatweed isnt even that tall yet:D I tell you what, if I hadnt heard such bad things about johnson grass and it had the protein and not have to watch the cows on it,I would have a pasture full. I seen a pasture were they had cut rye grass off it cple weeks ago and the johnson has came back already and is 3ft tall and thick, without fertilizer. I started tilling at leona yesterday evening, getting some common bermuda in on the bare spots and try to get some post in the ground on the new 1900 ft cross-fence.

I gotta go make sure STUD"S,not courting in someone elses pasture first:D

FE, our second and third cutting will be mostly Johnson Grass(at least it was last year). Orchard and Fescue don't like too much heat, Johnson loves the heat. The key to good Johnson is cutting it long before it seeds and is still tender...no higher than waist high. After that it gets stalks like corn and it is tough as nails. Everybody here feeds it to cattle, so I don't think that protein thing is a big deal. My cows and Clydes eat it, and have been for almost 5 years....no ill effects. Fescue can also be a problem is let go to long and some here swear it will hurt horse fetus's. Others feed it to pregnant mares and say it doesn't matter at all. ....go figure?

Did a second cutting on some fields Friday and 1st cutting on others. Fields contained Rye Grass and Coastal. We had our fields sprigged two years ago with Coastal and Midland 99. Stuff is growing like crazy. Most of the Rye grass is done now in my area so all other cuttings should be Bermuda. The sprigger brought in a little Johnson grass and looking for a way to kill the stuff.

I like him!!! Have you consider "Pearl Millet" ? Do a little research on it. I liked what I read about it and planted about 30 acres ... its about knee high now and I'm thinking I'll cut it in a couple weeks.

Nothing finer than good bermuda ... Johnson grass is hard to eradicate. I have a friend who swears by it.
