Alternative for hydraulic hose?

Why don't you tell Shaver that they have no idea what they are doing, and should not even include that G20, 1 in hose in the installation kit.

How many times have you seen the specs on the return hose on any hyd system less that the pressure hose?

I will call Shaver tomorrow to see what the requirement is for a return hose.

JJ,
In the mobile world most hoses are both pressure and tank depending on which way a cylinder is moving or a motor is turning so they typically use the same hose for both.

Now on a system where the line is always directly to tank a low pressure hose is very common. If you look at Parker, Gates, etc hose catalog they typically have a section for low pressure suction or return hoses.

So the answer to your question above is: It depends on the system..

The question IS about a specific system and has been answered authoritatively by multiple people. This is not a hypothetical question but a very specific one. Asked and answered, yet, in typical TBN fashion, debated by the unknowing. Shaver supplies return hose rated for something around 200-250PSI. And they have been building the exact same post drivers for about 35 years that I know of. I'll take their word for it.

Yea, sure.

The hoses supplied on the Shaver Post Pounder is a 1 in 1000 psi hose.

That is a fact. Believe it.

1 in hose even at a 1000 psi ain't cheap.

It's $3.09 per foot (fittings not included) from our online store. Not cheap, but certainly inexpensive. It's hard to believe people are getting angry and arguing about $30 worth of hose.

believe it... people like to talk about tangent subjects that are incedental to the real application at hand ALL the time here on TBN.

I'm in another discussion thread where a guy is changing the oil on his old ford tractor and wondered about putting non detergent oil in it.

I told him go ahead and do it a favor and use detergent oil, repalce the filter.. and go.

someone comes along and freaks out and says no, as non detergent is for machines with no oil filters.

I point out that all ford tractors left the factory with oil filters.

the other poster then comes back with the fact that his 100 yr old antique engines don't have filters.. some 100yr old car engines don't, and a fordson tractor didn't.

my reply was that the application we were discussing was a ford tractor that left the factory with a filter.. not an antique engine with no filter.. not an old car engine with no filter.. and not a FORDSON tractor.. but rather a ford. ( significant difference ). he got crabby and had the last word claimed he was still correct.. yada yada.. I gave up... :(

so.. believe it... if you are discussing a moth, people will side argue about butterflies...

It is return hose, not high pressure hydraulic hose. With all the discussions about Shaver's REQUIREMENT for a zero-pressure return and proper hookup that we have had here in the last 12 months, it should be pretty obvious what the return hose requirement is. Buying 1" one- or two-wire high pressure hose for this application is a waste of money.
Darn right. I used 5/8" std reinforced vinyl garden hose in mine. It is safe since the dump to sump is completely open and unrestricted as it should be. If anybody sees fit to put a QC anywhere past the valve in the return/dump line, that setup would not be safe without pressure hose. ... nor would you get optimum performance from the pounder with any hose choice.

I had a friend do that with a Case Maxi sneeker vibra trencher. He said it was only a return line and had about 25psi on it. Well he was right, I could not argue wil him. I still told him he should use a 1 wire or specific return hose. He argued with me so just like Sound Guy I shook my head and walked away. Well guess what, when the oil heated up to 150 deg or so the plastic garden hose blew out at the fitting and fortunatly did not hit anyone in the face with hot oil but it did blow hydraulic oil all over the new brick wall we had just completed. 8 years ago and the stain is still there, all just to save about $8 for a 2 foot hose.

I cant vouch for others mistakes.
... You have to know and understand your setup and equipment. For instance, a trencher is constant and fairly hi flow and pressure, and HP use is up there because of it. Theres where you get heat, as well as constant return pressure not seen on a post driver. Also it is not clear whether your friend used a 1/2 inch, and/or unreinforced hose, and/or a QC. Beyond any or all of those major misses, the comparison to the situation with a pounder is still remote.
... A pounder is very lo flow, only requiring lo rpm to raise the pounder quickly. Duty cycle is approx 50%. Return pressure will reach 25+ PSI for only a split second during the fall cycle. Even in hot weather the fluid doesnt get as hot as a hose in the sun. My reinforced 5/8 hose remains shrunken as if it is in storage, and shows no pulsing.

It was 5/8" reinforced, you could see the braids sticking out of the rip!! You are 100% correct with understanding your set up and equipment, you can get away with alot. It is the other 50% of people I worry about. Like the ones who wrap ducttape around a leak while the machine is operating!! CJ
