What's on the menu? Burgers, steaks, chops, hot dogs, bratwurst, ribs, chicken, whatever?

Burgers are on the menu here...nothing really fancy.

Started this thread mainly so I could show off my custom-made grill umbrella mount. It's nothing fancy, simply a section of PVC pipe and a pair of 1 1/2" PVC pipe caps, the bottom one is screwed down to the deck boards. the upper one is cut out with a hole saw. The lower metal tube for the umbrella is inside the pipe itself and the whole thing is bolted thru the deck rail. Be sure to align the pipe properly before drilling thru everything if your umbrella is square like mine. You will never find a more solid inexpensive umbrella mount.

Bill,
That's a nice looking project.
You have a hood on your grill so be sure to close it if you leave the area for a minute. I would also suggest a dry chemical fire extinguisher hanging on a bracket near by. Some of the VFD guys can give stats on house fires caused by grills on decks. Has your umbrella fabric been treated with a fire retardant?

We grill whenever the weather permits. Scattered showers predicted for our part of OH the next 3 days, so we will grill to encourage rain here. We sure need rain. It feels like August.

My dad had no brothers, but he had nine older sisters. At the end of WWII, when all the men came home, the killed a hog and had a celebration, slow-cooking it over a bed of coals.

The tradition continues, and we have a huge get-together every Memorial Day weekend.

I am cooking a 240 pound hog, sixty chickens, a case of beef hot dogs, a crate of fresh sweet corn (also over the coals), several pounds of pork rib tips, and a few bratwurst.

I have been cutting and splitting some green hickory, as that makes some fine coals.

It will be a tiring weekend, as the hog will cook for about 20 hours, but it is good to see the family again.

Beef short ribs Sunday night. Local store has them at 1.49 a pound. Saturday night friends BBQ, so just need to bring some wine and beer.

Ribs will be smoked on western red alder in the smoker for an hour before going on the propane grill, to be slow cooked.

I cooked hamburgers for supper tonight. Just for the 2 of us, I use a Char-Broil Gas Patio Caddie . I'd consider it a flimsy toy, but it actually does steaks and burgers very well.

We actually have the same grill, and I have been using mine for about 10 years. Well, I am actually on my second. (the first burner rotted out) They are nice little grills. Especially if you are just cooking for two, or maybe three. A 25lb propane tank will last a year or two using it quite regularly in the summer. I think that I may fire mine up tomorrow, but probably just for burgers, however I haven't made bbq ribs in a long time. Anyways, Enjoy!

Last night I did a rare sirloin on the gas grill and we sliced it cross grain into thin strips to put on a "build your own" garden salad.

I'm not sure what else I get to grill, smoke, or wood BBQ yet. I LOVE to cook with wood outside (Like SchoosOut said also an excuse to drink beer and play with fire) but the wife knows I'm planning to wor hard outside all weekend, so she tries not to obligate me because she and the girls all like to eat BEFORE 10pm...

My vote would be for rack of slow smoked pork ribs on the cherry I cut in March one night and maybe whole chicken, cut in half over oak, and squealers (burgers with bacon chopped up inside) over whatever burns...

Maybe an occasional few skewers of shrimp as a side dish...

Yum! Now I'm really HUNGRY...

On Monday, before we eat, will have a minute of silence, and then raise a toast to all those who gallantly came before us and secured our freedom.

And Old Glory will proudly fly, as it always does.

Robert,

Well said sir!

We take turns saying grace and my daughters get Breakfast and Lunch, I get Dinner grace unless I'm not home. It is good to be the king...

I have been adding very specific prayers each night this week asking for their safety now, and thanking the sacrifices of the past. I hugely value our freedom, and I don't want it to fade away. I use my inside knowledge of military current ops, and my military history knowledge to "aim" our prayers.

Thanks to all Veterans, especially those who "gave their last, full measure of devotion".

Be well,
David

Ron,

Sorry you are getting the rain on a holiday weekend, but glad you are glad to get it.

It feels like August here too. Yesterday early it was kind of hazy and not too hot but it was like breathing soup, tiny exertion made me sweat like crazy. Then it got somewhere close to 90, and very humid. Typically we can avoid the humidity until mid June, but it was brutal yesterday... I got way too hot outside...

I wonder what the rest of the summer will be like?

Be well,
David

Bill,

Thanks for having a decent thread where I could post a few times without being a "post *****". :D
