E-mail delivery is an issue for many websites, not just ours. That's why there's an entire industry of companies that handle e-mail delivery.
In an effort to solve the issue, we switched all e-mail over to third party delivery through a company called critsend. They specialize in e-mail delivery and claim 99+% delivery. Unfortunately, even using that paid service, people were not getting e-mail notifications. Lots of people. And e-mails were bouncing for no reason at all. Lots of them.
This is one are where we have actually put a lot of work (and at this point, quite a bit of money too) in and have had mixed results. We switch providers and while that will fix a problem for one group of people, then a different group will stop getting e-mails.
In any event, we're not giving up on it but it's not as simple as flipping a switch.
