Heck, I can sell you all the Poison Ivy you want to plant right at the line edge or even lots of Multi-flower Rose bushes ;) I'm in Ashland County, and have property in Richland too... no zone (federal mandated water & septic is all) and codes and regulations that state where your trash can can set... I'll take no zoning please...

If you have a big dog perhaps start a compost pit right at the same spot one foot over the line ;)

I was thinking about adding a fence right up to the property line. I'll have to check with the zonning guy in my township about how close a fence can be to the line.

Check with your local ordinances to be sure, but where I live, there are no setback requirements for fences, and in fact, it is recommended to build the fence right on your side of the line, because if you don't, the neighbor could try to claim the property under adverse possession or something like that. Basically, if you both act like the property line is somewhere it isn't for long enough, the new property line becomes legally enforceable.

EDIT: IANAL.

I always thought fences went ON the property line, otherwise if offset to one side that became grounds to move the property line after awhile. Also, here (California), if I build a fence on the property line I can send the neighbor an invoice for half. If he doesn't pay his half, I can put a lien against his property.

That may be. Like I said, IANAL. My thinking is, put it just barely on my side of the line, that way if he wants to build a different kind of fence right up against mine, there's no conflict.

A good tight Barbed Wire fence will hold kids out or in. Then I'd plant some pretty honeysuckles on a tall trelis to block the view. Bees love honeysuckle and they do that pollen thing if you have a garden.

I would go for a wire fence to keep the kids away from the barn and forget it. The fence can be explained as liability protection on a working farm. It isn't worth starting a neighbor war over and after all you have a goat barn 15' from his line. Some people would not like that.

Now there is a plan. And wait until he's done building. But seriously, check on zoning, this is why we have zoning laws.

Yeah. If you have a dairy operation, seems to me there's no end of foul-smelling items you could put in close proximity to this playhouse.

So...My neighbor has decided out of all of the land he has, he is building a (third) playhouse for his one child.

Jake, you don't really give us much info. To say "all of the land he has" does not really tell us anything. Does he own 1, 2, 5, 10, more acres? Where is his house located in reference to the where the playhouse is planned? Is this area his yard? Why does it matter how many playhouses his child has? Isn't the kid growing up? Won't the kid be grown/gone in a few years? What does your 80 yo barn look like? Do you have pictures? It seems to me that people build sheds and playhouses in town that sit very close to their fences and their property lines. There are just too many variables that we don't know. I would recommend you talk to the planning and zoning people and take appropriate action.

Well thank you all for your input! Much appreciated, and entertaining to say the least! Love it! I'm happy to report that Wisdom and Knowledge have prevailed in this case! I chatted with my neighbor last night, and he apologized, stating that his wife, went on-line, and looked up the property lines, and realized I was spot on with where the line was, and he realized that he was in fact right on the line, if not over it onto my side. So he graciously said he will be moving it back a few feet. And told me that he is glad I said something about it.

So I thanked him, and said his plan sounds fine to me, and we are now in agreement! I told him I would be happy to help him bury the old holes and dig the new ones, if he wanted any help.

Thanks y'all.
