i put Mobil 1 in my toyota highlander and change it at 6k. been to 9 or 10 k once at at that point it was maybe 1 qt low (just to bottom of Safe area).

It still only works out to like 2 changes a year and the oil is not that much so i will change it more often as i have no way to tell.

whether you chose it by luck or from research, that specific mobil 1 is probably the one meant for the longest life of any that were sold in the united states. i have a 2005 european car that came with mobil 1 5w30 from the factory. when i was always working i ended up having the oil changed at a dealer, but last year i finally got around to doing them myself. i checked the owners manual to be certain what i needed, and basically it asks for an oil that meets the gm-ll-a-025 spec

i started looking and the only mobil 1 that meets that spec is the 0w40, which mobil calls the european car formula. i was curious and did some reading. from what i can figure, the mobil 1 sold here is different from what is sold in europe. it seems that our oil standards are emissions driven and the european standards are longevity driven. i'd guess there is a zinc content difference between what you get here and in europe for the other mobil 1 variants?

i'm pretty sure many (most?) of the factory dealers for these cars were buying oil locally that didn't even meet the manufacturer's specs. the dexos spec superseded the old spec, so i assume any mobil 1 now meets the spec, though it's not really an issue anymore.

A few years back I worked with a Mobil Oil sales rep, that was helping a Distributor I worked for to build up some customer base for Mobil products. He told me that Mobil sales guys furnished their own cars for the job and got paid mileage for them. Many of those guys drained the factory oil out at about a thousand miles, put in Mobil One with a new filter. After that, they changed the filter every 5,000, added oil to refill, and went to 25,000 before the total oil change. So---new filters at 5, oil change at 25, and he said those cars always lasted 150K to 200K and then were traded, no problems at all. Bear in mind though, that these guys often drive a few hundred miles on trips to see Distributors, not a ton of around town driving.
I use Chevron Supreme motor oil, Dino oil, and change at 3K to 4K, just me I guess, but my cars go a long way too. But synthetics like Mobil One are great.

I have 2 German cars and change by the service indicator. They used to use Mobil 1 but I heard they use a Castrol now. My older one goes 15,000 - 17,000 between changes depending on how many short trips. The newer one went 22,000 to its first change. Don't know about longevity - we only have 120k on the older one which we now use as a beater but it doesn't use any oil.

But at Cat we switched to 500 hour intervals on my product line when we went to Tier 3 and if you figure 40 mph average that is 20,000 miles equivalent. My line is 4.4 & 6.6 liter engines 135 - 175 HP. Lots of oil sampling and never found a reason for more frequent changes.

greasemonkeyok Thanks to bring up the different oil types. I made sure I bought the delvac when I bought the oil. I bought 5 one gallon jugs 4 for the 7.3L (15 quarts) and 1 for the Legacy XL. Looked at the oil and put 5 in the cart assuming they were all for diesels. As I hang my red face down in embarrassment and anger at myself for not checking all the jugs on that shelf, I inadvertently grabbed one regular jug. I still had the jugs from when I changed the oil on both engines. Luckily (I guess) I didn't put any regular in the 7.3L. Although I don't know if 4 out of 15 quaets would have done the same thing. An expensive lesson learned. I just wanted to say thanks. Now I know it wasn't bad oil. It would be nice if they used two different colored jugs. Either way it was my bad. All I use in all my engines is synthetic, being they don't breakdown like Dino. However keeping it clean especially in a diesel, is what you need to evaluate for your own situation. Short trips & heavy loads are what you need to evaluate. (That and reading labels) ha ha

Back in the 80's I worked as field service engineer and drove 20,000 miles pretty much consistently every year. I used Mobil 1 most of that time and changed the filter at 6 mo and aprox 10,000 miles and then oil and filter once a year or about 20,000 miles. Never an issue. When I would do valve adjustments at 100,000 miles, motor was as clean as a pin inside.

storm56 Hi I switched to all synthetic about 9 yrs ago. Mainly because sometimes I have tendency to go over change times. I put on about 25,000 to 30,000 miles every year. I usually run beaters when: I can to keep the miles down on the newer vehicles. I've had 2 go over 400,000 both of them the egines still ran without any ticks or knocks. The tractor is the first to blow bearings or any other major engine problems. I take pride in a good running engine. I believe its because of good oil and keeping it clean. I can't remember using something other than Mobil 1. I just know it hasn't let me down yet. I'm embarrassed making such a mistake. I've made mistakes but not one this bad. Well at least I know the lower engine has new bearings and clean. That was a year of letting the lawn get away from me. Wanted to ask my neighbor if wanted to bail it. ha ha Expensive but running great now. 150 hours since the rebuild. I've been thinking of changing the transaxle over. I haven't heard anything on trains synthetics and how they're doing.

Mrkdmar - Sorry to hear of your issue with the Legacy. It would seem unlikely it was the fault of the oil. I am not familar with the Legacy, gas or diesel? I have used synthetic ATF and gear oil over the years with no issues, of course I had no issues using dino products either. The big advantage to me with synthetics is the longer service life. In equipment that I do not run as much I tend to go with regular dino stuff.

Mobile 1 on all cars at 10 k. I disagree on the filter changes at earlier intervals so I change at 10 k as well.

Tractor is changed once a year with 150 hours per year as average.
