Hi-
I am getting ready to do a 500 hr oil and filter change on my L3830 Kubota. Kubota recommends using 10w30, 10w40 or SAE30 oil - all are okay with temperature ranges I live in. Lows of 10Fin winter and highs of 95-100F in summer. Is there any rhyme or reason as to what to use? I would assume a multiviscosity oil makes the most sense, but which one?

multi vis is the way to go. in colder temps ( pa right? ) that straight 30 will be like grease on startup.

in hot desert temps.. maybee not bad.. but still.. a nice oil like a 15w40 C rated is the general diesel catch all for dino.. and 5w40 C rated for synthetic for moderate temperatures. in cold climates for dino, a 10w30 C rated oil.

Note. many places do not stock 10w30 C rated.. though S rated is common. as for 10w40 oil.. I see S rated oils.. but not sure I have ever seen 10w40 C rated. whatever you do.. use a C rated oil that meets the minimum spec in the book. IE.. the 2nd letter and number combo after the 'C' ( CI, CI-4, CJ etc.. )

Years ago, I spent some time trying to make sense of the oil requirements for our various machines, and we settled on Delo 15W-40 for all of the diesels (Kubota, JD and Navistar).
In fact, the two closest Kubota dealers both quietly recommend it (or similar 15W-40 brands), despite the fact that they carry much more expensive factory oils.
Costco and many others sell Delo.....

i pretty much use 15w40 in all my tractors.. save one that I switched to synthetic after a bent pushrod and stuck valve situation. my trucks all get 4w40 syn.

EVERYTHING....including my gasoline powered equipment and all my diesel equipment gets Shell Rotella 5w-40 synthetic. It's expensive, but a lot easier to have one oil for eveything. My main concern is the well being of my diesels. The gasoline engines are getting the benefit by default.

kinda the same here. I have a mix of diesel and gas tractors. I use 15w40 for all them.. thus the gassers are geting a benefit.

my truck diesels and 1 tractor are getting synthetic.. I want the engines lasting... I do some multi state hauls fething antique machines and not uncommon to make runs to the lower southeast / west 1-4 states away on weekends hauling a gooseneck trailer.. running with 2 drivers, extra fuel tank and driving straight thru with few stops save food/tinkle.. last trip to texas ran 46 hours straight pretty much...

Wow, what an idiot I am!! How simple a solution so obvious a monkey could figure it out. I have synthetics for mt ATV's, different oils for my lawn tractors and chipper and now 15w40 for my tractor. Thanks for pointing out the obvious to me, now I know why I love this site so much, even simple things can be valuable lessons.

I think 'idiot' is being kinda harsh on yerself. Nothing -wrong- with running a specific oil in each equipment.

it's just that some of us consolodate. 15w40 S/C rated oils, in a wide range of climates are good for both diesel and gassers.. especially small engine gassers and slightly older gas vehicles that don't cal for a 0w/5w 20 type energy saving oil... thus stocking 1 oil for many engines. that way you can buy by the pail or drum. heck.. my lawnmowers even get 15w40 or syn.

same deal on the 5w40 syn's or other types of syn. for their specifics.

same deal with using a UTF fluid to replace plain hyd oil, and gear oil in some non HD applications.

for a guy with varried equipment.. buying a drum of 15w40 and a drum of UTF and perhaps a pail of gear oil... can mostly service ALL his stuff.. :)
and you've always got some spare!

most of the loggers & hd equip operators around here use shell rotella 15/40 dyno which i'm sure serves them well. along with others in this thread, i have gone over to rotella syn 5/40 in all my equip from zero turn, log splitter, vehicles, & my M8540...obviously it's convenient to use 1 in all....but what changed my mind is when i changed rotella 15/40 dyno in tractor in close to freezing temp...yes the warmed oil drained fine, but man the pouring the new oil in the crankcase took forever it seemed....on a cold start up @ 10 degrees how long does it take to flow to engine parts? but i know it's all about residual film on journals, etc too....really it's personal i think, & how well you sleep @ night.. time to turn in.

Shell Rotella, Mobil Delvac or Delo 400 15W40 in everything I own from tractors, cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATV's, and all small engine stuff. The ONLY exception I make is for when I buy a new vehicle and the mfg recommends 5W20 or 5W30 while it is still under warranty, after that it gets the mentioned oil.
