My power company buddies love to back feed into generators. If they hear them they do what they can to blow them.

why do you assume there will be a backfeed issue, and not an isolated use?

Well said. Just because a generator is on does not mean you are backfeeding the grid!!!

correct. many times I have my pto genset strapped to the back of a tractor, inthe back pasture, using my stick welder.

for a power co person to be setting nearby and foaming at the mouth hoping to 'blow up ' my genny is an odd thought...

I guess ome people just set around and try to think up bad situations and ways to make it bad for other people? glad I'm not one of htose with the negative outlook... :(

These seems to be a "Surge" of box store generator purchases for folks that can't be without power for more than a few minutes. My lineman buddies are concerned when these folks connect their new generators without really knowing how dangerous it can be if not connected with a cutout. It's normally very quiet when there is a power outage.... with the exception of a sputtering 10 horse generator or two or three......

For those generators not used as backup, there is no problem.
I see your point Soundguy.

I just mounted the gen to the carryall and decided to check all outlet grounds to the generator case to make sure they were all grounded properly which they were (for safety). My understanding of electrical is that the hot leads in the outlets to ground should show no continuity. Well I have continuity. Did I get taken on this gen? Is there a short? Could Soundguy test your unit to see if continuity exist on yours. I cannot hook up the gen because i am waiting on the shaft. I f there is a problem i would like to know asap so i could call the seller. Any help would be great. thanks
Are you by chance measuring from hot to neutral rather than hot to ground?

I wonder if the first oil that came with the generator is special for run in. There is a short change period on the first change, presumably to get all the steel and crap out of the box. Were it me, I'd run the original oil that came with the unit until the first change, as it is fairly brief anyway. If your box didn't come filled, disregard, but mine came filled.

Mine also is loud, but I have not really used it enough to get to the first change period. Soundguy has practical use of his, so I'd go with his advice overall, but maybe consider mine until the first oil change is due.

That is something that probably shouldn't be posted but its just my opinion. If I was personally aware of that fact I would have them arrested they are endangering the owner and his property.

To say or do that or be aware of it could be any number of crimes none are good. my .002

Line crews can power the lines up. Line crews can short the lines together and to ground. These are all fair game for a line crew and all without any generator owner's permission. Does anyone know of anything else the line crew can do that could damage an improperly connected generator? I don't.
